Shipboard Security Functions: The control panel displays information readouts about the internal protection of the ship and its crew. The first tier of coverage involves a low-level approach, which is just basic crew safety. The second tier is active during diplomatic or cultural missions, which centers around providing security to distinguished guest on the ship. The next level incorporates high-level counterintelligence measures that may be brought into play to negate sabotage or terrorist penetration onto the ship. Security is also responsible for the handling of personal side arms.

Starship Defense Functions: The survival of the ship often rests in the hands of both security and tactical officers. Tactical has the immediate availability of defensive shields, phaser banks, and photon and quantum torpedoes, all first-line devices.

Tactical coordinates with the Flight Control Officer and Flight Operations positions in all situations involving external hazards. Guidance and navigation's information, targeting data, and external communication are networked through these three stations. Thus expanding the options available for dealing with unknowns.

Tactical also uses long- and short-range sensor arrays, probes, message buoys and tractor beam devices as situations warrant their usage.
