The Earth 2 Characters: The "Other Eight"
Not much is known about the remaining members of Eden Advance. From information gleaned from the show, it seems that they are a mixture of crew members who never intended to land on G889 and colonists who were to lend their various skills to the New Pacifica colony. The following is purely this author's conjecture based on the show and conversations with other Earth 2 fans and is not to be considered "canon" (unless otherwise stated).
Baines (Rockmond Dunbar) Baines was first seen on the flight deck of Eden Project's advance ship, lending credence to the belief that, like Alonzo Solace, he was not supposed to land on G889. Escaping in the same pod as Devon and most of the others who survived the crash, Baines' duties primarily consisted of scouting and guard duty. Later, his technical expertise became apparent when he constructed a perimeter warning system, intended to be activated during the night to provide advance warning of intruders. His obvious unease with planet life was demonstrated several times, most notably when Eden Advance discovered a centuries-old terrian frozen in the ground. When Julia brought it back to camp and a variety of unexplained mishaps occurred, Baines locked himself in the transrover and refused to come out until it was destroyed. In a conversation with Rockmond Dunbar, it was learned that this character has no last name; he is simply known as "Baines."
Walman (Walter Norman) It is unclear what Walman's assignment was with Eden Advance. However, once crashing on G889, Walman proved capable at helping Danziger keep the vehicles working as well as advance scouting for locations to camp for the night. Though he took his share of the night guard duty assignments, it was apparent that he was not a night person as he frequently fell asleep during his shifts.
Magus (Marcia Magus) Though not a romantic one, Magus seems to have a previous relationship with John Danziger due to her familiarity in talking to him. This leads us to believe that she worked on the Operations crew for Eden Advance. A feisty, capable woman, Magus has been seen going on scout and is not above a little hard work.
Cameron (Kirk Trutner) Though Cameron never spoke and was primarily seen moving boxes and other assorted equipment, Kirk Trutner developed a biography for his character that Earth 2 fans consider canon. Cameron was one of the colonists intending to remain on G889. He is multi-disciplined with a probable emphasis on biology and geology in the hopes of using the planet to maintain their existence on G889 once their supplies ran out.
Eben Synge (Erin Murphy) Another character who never spoke, Eben remained very much in the background until the final episode. When an unknown illness struck Eden Advance, Eben was the first to become sick. Her death had a profound affect on Eden Advance, especially Bess Martin, so it can be assumed that she was well-liked. A young woman who showed signs of a playful spirit (she was seen thoroughly enjoying herself during the water fight at the end of the episode "Water"), Eben could very possibly have been a colonist eager to experience the adventure that the journey to G889 would bring.
Mazatl (Fred Lopez) Mazatl was also seen during the first episode with other members of the Operations crew. Therefore, it is believed that he was not intending to land on G889. As with other characters who never spoke and were very much in the background, Mazatl was frequently seen helping set-up and break-down camp as well as walking a great deal during the journey to New Pacifica. One can believe that he is not a stranger to hard work and would prove to be a great asset to Eden Advance.
Denner (Danielle Fischer) The fourth of the "non-speaking" characters, even less is known about Denner. Like Mazatl, she was seen helping in camp. However, so little was seen of her that it's nearly impossible to determine whether she was crew or colonist.
Zero (Tierre Turner) Zero is a robot designed to assist in building the colony . . . literally. He came equipped with a variety of tools that were stolen, so he ended up not being much help. He did have scanning capabilities and was effective as a guard . . . one can assume especially so when Walman was on duty. You see, being a robot, Zero never sleeps.
