The Nuclear Submarine

by Jean-Loup Sabatier

This is the story of the captain of a nuclear submarine which became
progressively mad. Our PC are submariner characters from the crew of
the ship.

Some years ago, the captain began to hear some weird things in the sonic
echoes coming back from the abyssal/abysmal darkness. he listened to them
most of the day, and developed a mystic of the Abyss. But, now, this is his
last mission, and he decided never to surface again.

Paranoia and harsh discipline grows in this claustrophobic setting, as
their captain go mad...

They are all the time in alert exercise. The red light of the alert gives a
spectral aspect to the ship. The glittering orange lights above each door and
on each command panel strengthen the suffocating atmosphere. The warm sticky
air in this shadowy red light becomes soon unbearable.

The ship remain completely silent, in stealth mode, just listening to the
echoes of sound waves with their passive sonars. The silence in the gangways
is only troubled by occasional bursts of electric voices giving military
orders and reports in the speakers of the walls.

As their captain gives each day more clues of his growing madness, there is
rumors saying that the captain has the codes to launch the 30 nuclear heads
of the submarine. (false rumor).

Now the captain is *feeling* the things around the ship with is mind, and he
is understanding what the ocean says to him. There is a voice in the darkness,
(the voice /of/ the darkness)....

I feel a thick dismal atmosphere in this setting, but I don't know how I
could continue... (your ideas, suggestions and critics are welcome!)

- There could be a problem with the nuclear reactor. But the captain don't
want to return to the surface, because each times he surfaces again, it
takes him about a month in the womb of the ocean before hearing again the
Voice of Darkness... The ship will soon be contaminated by radioactive
wastes, but he don't want abort his "mission" (he feels he his SO close to
his "awakening").

- In the core of the submarine, is there any connection which opens between
the submarine and the Inferno? between the submarine and the city machine?
Crew members could run away from the wrecked nuclear submarine using this
gate... They pass in a section the city machine on the shores of the Primal
Sea. After some days in the city machine, they could emerge again in the
Illusion on board of an abandoned (rusty, dilapidated) off-shore petrol
platform in the (cold, steel-gray) North Sea.

- could the submarine finally surface again in the dull green-black waters
of the Primal Sea, at only some fathom of the Demiurge's Citadel island?

- does the captain suffers the first physical changes from his madness? How
the crew could react to it? Do they still recognize their captain?

- could the captain finally awaken? What would he do with his crew?

- what else?
