Cotton was having an affair with Sidney's mom, Maureen Prescott. And one day the poor guy found himself on trial for her murder. Cotton was framed by Billy Loomis and Stuart Macher, and was sent to death row by Sidney testifying against him.
They had found his jacket at the Prescott home and put it on-getting it all bloody after they killed Mrs. Prescott, and then put it in Cotton's car. Sidney saw someone leaving her house that looked like him-with his jacket on-so she thought it was him to and had to be on the stand at his trial to say what she saw.
