Doggett and Reyes bring Morris Fletcher to the Lone Gunmen to seek their help in finding Yves Adele Harlow, who Morris claims is actually a super-soldier.
While it's good to see the Gunmen back in action, this episode was set up as the conclusion to their spin-off series. This episode is something quite different, a last hurrah for the guys before the series ends and one which sees their demise. It's somehow difficult to be upset about the loss of the Gunmen, firstly because, with the end night, killing off major characters is hardly a big problem. You also feel that they're being stupid to all die when surely only one of them need bother in the situation in which they find themselves.
The return of Yves and Jimmy is very welcome, but while trying to service the Gunmen and the X-Files regulars, there's simply not enough space for them to be too heavily involved. Evidently we got about all the explanation we were going to at the end of the Lone Gunmen series, as there's no sign of the crew continuing on from where they left off. Add to that Scully and Skinner turning up for a couple of lines each and you're left with the plot: people are using sharks as a model to become more resistant to viruses, which is useful if you have one inside you, like a time bomb about to go off. It's a good idea, but one which is hampered by things getting awfully muddled somewhere along the line to the extent that I'm not entirely sure what having shark parts inside you did in relation to the virus.
I suppose it's simply that I was expecting more. The Gunmen's farewell is pretty low-key, even the funeral, and the revelations about Yves seem paltry when she was built up to be a much more mysterious a character than someone called Lois with a billionaire father. And I still want to know exactly what happened after the group was caught at the end of their show. Was Yves just turned over to her father? What was Fletcher trying to do? How did the Gunmen get out of the jam they were in? I suppose now we'll never know.
