Mulder goes after a creature that appears when people see a raven, kills and vanishes.
This is a very lightweight and predictable X-Files, which follows the template of many past shows but resembles season one werewolf tale Shapes the most. Firstly, it's because this is about another shape changer and secondly, it's because it's not very good either.
The whole Jekyll and Hyde/werewolf thing has been done so many times, it's difficult to make something new from the concept, but the writer of this episode doesn't seem to have even tried. You know who's going to get killed, the killer is the most obvious person, there's no exciting sudden twist at the end and once again Mulder is saved by someone managing to tame the part of them that kills with relative ease. What's odd is why the creature appears after the two women having an affair with 'it's' husband are dead. Presumably things can get back to normal, you'd think.
Obviously it's Gillian Anderson's week off, but the bits with her in are the best aspect to the story as she tries to solve the mystery of the vanishing prostitutes with amazing success. This lighter touch has been absent for too much of this series, and it's about time we saw more of it. As to the rest of the episode: the main plot should have been cut down so we could see more of Scully's investigation, because Mulder's is just dull.
