Mulder finds himself aboard a ship in the Bermuda Triangle which has made a return appearance from World War II. As he tries to stop history being changed, he is surprised to find that many of those on board resemble people he knows.
Now this is a curiosity. Stories that Chris Carter writes and directs are always something a bit different, and Triangle is no exception. Much of the episode is filmed using tracking shots, with the most effective moments being when the camera follows Scully all round the FBI building as she tries to find out where Mulder is before leaving with the Lone Gunmen. There are also a couple of changes in evidence here: the Gunmen are not only allowed into FBI headquarters, but for a change don't seem too worried about being out and about. Secondly, Scully seems to have finally acquired a desk, something she complained to Mulder about way back in Season Four.
Meanwhile, Mulder discovers that a group of Nazis led by someone looking like the Cigarette Smoking Man, and including in their ranks Spender and Skinner lookalikes, are searching for a scientist to help them with an atomic bomb, so he enlists a Scully facsimile to help him.
Triangle has one very serious problem: it is not completely coherent. Fun as it might be to see Mulder taking on Nazis, and Scully making some disturbing discoveries at the FBI, there is no real explanation of what is going on at any given moment, unless it's in the large amount of German dialogue uttered by William B Davis. At the end of the episode, it doesn't really make any more sense than the beginning. How did Mulder get on and off the ship? How come Scully and thr Lone Gunmen were in the present when they boarded the ship, not the past? And why exactly would Mulder kiss 1939-Scully? Did he just want to know what it was like? If he wants to kiss the real one, why doesn't he? Too many questions, or this episode could have been a lot better.
