A little bit of Mythology

Pluto, the Greek Hades, was son of Saturn and brother of the two great gods Jupiter and Neptune. King of Hell, he had abducted Proserpine, daughter of Jupiter and Ceres (Demeter) to make her his wife and the queen of the dead. The whole myth, in the Roman Empire as well as Greece, showed a very marked agricultural aspect and a seasonal signification. Proserpine represented vegetation, that seems to disappear underground, to Hell, during a period of the year. We must nevertheless keep ourselves from giving purely agrarian interpretations to this kind of religious legends, because it is true that the agrarian magic has existed, but it was also the expression of the soul and its mysteries. This psychological aspect of the agricultural myths has been silenced for a long time; it is still badly known by a few historians nowadays.
