Chapter 6 - The Flood
Guest written by Jeff Bell

It came to pass that Sonny and Sonny's adopted chinese family of five went on vacation. They chose a spot near and dear to their hearts: the Swamp. The same swamp that had given birth, ...well not really given birth because a swamp can't really give birth. You see a swamp is an inanimate object, not a sentient being that can procreate and...well, whatever. Anyway, they chose the swamp that Sonny had spent his early childhood in, the swamp that the family had plucked Sonny out of, the swamp that was to sound the doom of Sonny's family.

The vacation to the swamp started innocently enough. The family found a good spot to park their bicycles and began looking around. Sonny went off by himself to find his long-lost animal friends. His sisters: Yenny and Jane, went to look at the wondrous surroundings. His brother, Cain, went to find a tree to pee on. While wandering around, Sonny began to remember his childhood and the happiness that he had possessed. Sonny began to think that maybe the swamp was the best place for him. After all, the animals had always been nice, unlike his brother, Cain.

Yenny and Jane were dealing with thoughts as well. They reflected back on what childhood must have been like for their squat, smelly adopted brother. Yenny thought that Sonny must have had to eat terrible things just to survive. Jane thought that Sonny probably went naked in the swamp even more often then he did at home now, if that was possible.

The only thoughts that Cain had were of relief and curiosity of what tree to pee on next.

While all four children were out, and the parents were setting up base camp, the rain began. Nobody knew that this rain would turn into a monsoon, a terrible flood. Nobody that is, except Sonny. When Sonny felt the first drops hit his face, he knew what was coming. After all it had done this every year that Sonny had grown up in the swamp. Sonny knew that his family was going to be in trouble. Summoning the speed that he had learned from the swamp monkey, Sonny began swinging through the trees towards the base camp where his parents would be. As he was travelling, the water began to rise.

By the time Sonny arrived at base camp, the water was over eight feet high. He was too late. His adopted parents were floating face-down in the water. With tears of rage in his eyes, Sonny determined not to let the rest of his family succumb to this flood. As he swung through the trees towards his sisters, Sonny called out to his old swamp friends: the crocodiles. They came to his call and swam alongside the enraged boy.

When Sonny arrived where his sisters were, he thought that he was too late again. His sisters' bodies were nowhere to be seen. Then Sonny spotted a hand, but unfortunately the crocodiles saw it too. Before Sonny could react twenty hungry crocs devoured his two sisters, staining the water red with blood. Sonny screamed in defiance at the animals that had betrayed him, but they were only following their instincts and Sonny could do nothing but go on to his brother.

Sonny swung through the trees alone towards where his brother had last been urinating. Sonny immediately spotted Cain who had climbed a tree to avoid the water. The tree was close to breaking however and Cain had nowhere to go. Sonny began approaching closer to his brother, but as he was, the tree broke and Cain was plunged into the water. Sonny immediately reached out to Cain, but Cain merely spat in Sonny's face as he was carried beneath the water. There was no way Cain could survive in crocodile infested swamp water.

Sonny wanted to think and this was not the place to do it. He swung to the edge of the swamp and onto dry land. Sonny had nothing left. His family was dead. His swamp companions had become too vicious for Sonny's liking, his school friends had all gone away. Sonny was truly alone. But, Sonny had heard once of a great city and a great man that lived there. Sonny decided to go see this man so that this man could give direction and meaning to Sonny's life. So Sonny stripped off his clothes, took out his snakeskin flute and began playing a sassy tune before walking out into the night towards the big city.
