on the classic trek klingons and the 'modern' klingons.
Much of the following information will come from the article: A Comprehensive Look at the Klingons, by Adam G. Alsop.
Basically, there are three types of Klingons. The type that appeared in the original series, the type seen only in ST:TMP, and the type seen since, from ST:TSFS to Star Trek: The Next Generation. The Klingon homeworld, Quonos, is said to be 70% populated by the original klingons, known as wa'DIch(First Klingon). Worf, Gowron, and Kruge from ST3 are all wa'DIch Klingons. 15% is said to be the Klingons we see in Classic Star Trek. These look like humans with tanned skin, and exaggerated, evil eyebrows. They are cha'DIch(Second Klingon). The cha'DIch are not pure klingon, but they are interbred with other humanoids. 5% of the population is said to be chu'tlhIngan(New Klingon). We see these Klingons only once, in ST:TMP, when V'ger vaporizes them. The chu'tlhIngan are specially bred for battle. All invitro, all sterile, their temperments are fit only for combat. They are the pit bulls of the empire.
Do I agree with this anology? It does seem logical for the most part, although I disagree strongly with the population figures. Since chu'tlhIngan Klingons were seen only once, and never thereafter mentioned, it seems to me
that genetic engineering was only a passing fancy for the empire. 5% of Quonos' population is too generous a figure for the New Klingons. If any still exist, there definately are not many. Why did we not see them at times of crises
during Star Trek: The Next Generation, or especially DS9?! As for 15% of Quonos being Second Klingons, neither do I agree with this. For the simple reason that these Klingons did not appear after Trek TOS, I believe that they no longer
exist. In my sourcebook, Molyneaux explains that wa'DIch consider Second Klingons inferior. Thus, cha'DIch were sent out on exploration and expeditions of conquer, as First Klingons felt they were inexpendible. Since wa'DIch are now
seen in the hot seat of exploration and war, we must assume that there are very few, if any cha'DIch klingons left. Why not? Well if wa'DIch considered cha'DIch inferior, and taking into account the violent nature of Klingons,
it is only logical to presume that the chaDIch have either been treated cruelly as a minority and are now slaves, or they have been exstinguished by wa'DIch in war, or the cha"DIch have left the predominantly wa'DIch worlds and act
in another part of the galaxy, probably on the far side of the Beta Quadrant away from the Alpha.
