Area 51

"What are you suggesting Mulder? That the Air Force is flying UFO's?!"
-Dana Scully

"No. Planes Built using UFO technology"
-Fox Mulder

The following quote was from The X-Files episode "Deep Throat", in which Mulder and Scully investigate the disappearance of an army test pilot in a small town near an Area 51-like military base. Just a show, or another example of art imitating life? After it's appearance in the film "Independence Day" (in which it was similar only in name, and the fact that it housed a recovered alien spaceship), the CD-ROM games Area 51 and Entry Denied, and an upcoming film called Area 51, this base has been imitated much in art. But how much of this is really true?

In the desert of Nevada, 90 miles north of Las Vegas, there exists a US Air Force facility, that does not appear on any maps, and the existence of is denied. In this base highly classified planes have been tested, such as the B2 Stealth Bomber, U2 Spy Plane, Blackbird Spyplane, SR-71 and F-117A Stealth Bombers, the "Star Wars" Strategic Defense System, and all kinds of radar evading helicopters and pilotless planes. They are now allegedly testing The Aurora, a hypersonic craft that can go 5,000 mph. Pentagon denies the existence of this craft, just as they had the Stealth Bomber for 20 years. It takes about one billion to one billion and a half dollars a year to run this place, none of which appears on the federal budget. Why such secrecy, and where is the technology coming from?

This could easily be explained by the most popular theory surrounding the base, which states that it is the home to the ship from the Roswell crash, and any other alien spaceship that the government was able to get there hands on. This would be ultra-classified because the existence of extraterrestrial life is allegedly the governments most protected secret, and could explain the planes because they're using the UFO technology to create them. Claims of Area 51 housing recovered alien technology in which they use to build planes have been circulating since the 1950's, all of which the government has denied. A good way to explain just what is going on in the deserts of Nevada, but is there any truth behind these rumours?

In 1989, technical engineer Robert Lazar made an appearance on KLAS TV news, and claimed that he had worked the sector S-4 position in Area 51. He said he had worked on a disc-shaped craft approximately 30-35 feet wide and 15 feet high, with "reverse engineering". On the inside he said it looked like it had all been carved from one piece. He was never told of it's origin, but was pretty sure that it had not crashed. Knowledge of it was on a "need to know" basis. He sounded very credible, but lost some of that when it was discovered that he lied about his background and was caught in a Nevada brothel. However, this does not necessarily prove wrong any of his claims. "Bob Lazar's story is fascinating and I feel it's essentially true. I think's he's lied about his credentials-there's absolutely no evidence that he has any qualifications as a nuclear physicist, but he's a very talented engineer for sure", says British UFOlogist Timothy Good. "I think he needed to bolster his image to make his story more credible, but of course, once people realize that he's exaggerated about something, they tend to throw the baby out with the bath water, which, in his case, I don't think we should."

"I developed a rash, skin rash. I use sandpaper to get the scale off, because it's the only way I can remove it"
Anonymous Ex-Area 51 Employee, ABC World News Bulletin

In December of 1994, the next chapter of the Area 51 saga began. Lawyer Jonathan Turley began representing 5 ex-Area 51 employees and the widow of another one, in an attempt to bring suit against them for the burning of radioactive material that's been going on since the 1980's. This has caused the serious illness of many of their workers, and a similar death to Robert Frost. Hazardous chemicals expert Peter Kahn analyzed tissue sample from Frost's body, and could only ask "What on Earth has this man been exposed to?!"

"The running gag was, the place didn't exist. so anything could occur there"
Ex-Area 51 Employee

Not only did no one know what these people had been exposed to, but there was very little that could be done about it. people has massive radiation burns, and a terrible skin rash, but they were unable to tell their doctors about what they do, under the threat of breach of security. In the proceedings, the government admitted that there was "am operating facility near Groom Lake", but insisted that it remain nameless, and tried to ban the terms Area 51 and Dreamland (despite the fact that the latter is used in the Congressional Record and Pentagon in house newspaper). US Secretary of Air Force Sheila Widnel soon submitted an affidavit that if the government felt any disclosures, they would be a grave threat to national security (they also took 4,000 acres of land in Nevada offering good views of Area 51, including Freedom Ridge, which no longer lives up to it's name), which basically included all of the defenses evidence, and blocked them from ever getting any more. They have still yet to see a penny.

"It's like something out of a bad fifties movie. The Soviets have pictures of it, kids in Nevada play with toy planes that fly from it, and I've got clients who are dying from it...but it doesn't exist"
-Jonathan Turley, The Observer, December 4, 1994

So what is causing this? It is likely that a plane with reverse engineering built using alien technology would require some kind of alien power source, also recovered. From the the burns it would appear that it is something radioactive, and something from another planet could be far worse than anything we have here, which could explain the odd nature of the burns (maybe Mr. Frost was not exposed to something on Earth at all). It is also possible that there is something organic in there, something that is mostly harmless, but we have no immunity to, which could cause people to break-out into a terrible rash. So if that's the case, maybe this does not involve the government, but a virus lying dormant in the deserts of Nevada, that the Area 51 employees contracted by working out there. But have any of these cases occurred outside of Nevada?

Yes, there has been. At 9:00 pm on December 29 of 1980, Betty Cash, her friend Vicky Landrum and Vickie's 7 year old grandson Colby were driving outside of Huffman, Texas. At that time they saw a bright object in the sky, and got out to take a look at it, when it began to hover no more than 135 feet away. Flames then began shooting out. They tried to get back into the car, as the door handle began to hot to touch. They followed the craft as it flew away, and noticed it was being followed by 23 Chinook twin-rotored helicopters.

After Betty got home she began suffering headaches, neck pains, skin-irritation, and hair loss. She began vomiting uncontrollably and fluid filled nodules appeared on her scalp. The Lundrums suffered similar ailments, but not to as much of an extreme, because they were in the car most of the time. Four days later Betty was admitted for burns at Parkway General Hospital in Houston for burns. She went from doctor to doctor to doctor, her medical bill totaling $10,000 by February of 1981. None of them knew what was wrong with her, though it was agreed that she was exposed to some kind of radioactivity. Cash and Landrum tried to sue the government, but just like Turley, had no success. Several representatives from the Air Force, the Army, Navy and NASA testified that they did not have any plane like that (did a private citizen own it?), while none of the other people who claimed to have witnessed the plane were allowed to testify. Not only is the government willing to create and test these planes at a high cost to humanity (but if they didn't the Soviets would have surely bombed us all by now), but they are also unwilling to pick up the cost of it.

From the accurate portrayal of an Air Force base that does not exist in "Deep Throat", to "Independence Day's" idea that the Roswell ship is in one piece, and Will Smith is able to fly it, Area 51 has become a popular part of our culture. But the question is does it belong one? It now appears as if there is an alien force threatening our planet, but instead of it being visitors from another planet who wish to dominate ours (See:Can life exist on other planets?), the alien threat is the governments testing of their technology. Just as you're advised not to bring plants or animals into another country, the same should apply with planets, because this is what happens when worlds collide.
