So you choose to stay and fight this person to the death. To die for someone is a noble sacrifice indeed, but you aren't doing that. You are dying for yourself. You are letting pride stand in the way of your love. I too thought this would be the right answer, but this way you are only willing to give your life, though no small gift, but you aren't willing to overcome your pride and run away so that you can be with your love.
