Amazed@Him !

"..He was in the Temple, sitting among the religious teachers, discussing deep questions with them. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers."
Luke 2:46-47

We could only speculate what "deep" is, and what amazing answers Jesus shared to them. But it is not difficult to imagine how to be amazed at the new kind of knowledge someone shares to you. I remember when I was little, my Dad told me things about Mayon Volcano which delighted me so much that I got lost in my amazement and I didn't give much thought about my Dad, how he is simply amazing for knowing such things and sharing them to me.
The same thing happened to the religious teachers in the temple. They were amazed at the deep understanding and answers of a twelve-year-old boy probably discussing the meaning of life or the fate of the universe with them, but they were not amazed AT Jesus Himself. They missed the most important thing in that encounter : Jesus Himself is simply amazing !
This is the common pitfall of man - to be amazed at the gifts, but not at the Giver.
A lot of leaders in those times overlooked the amazing personhood of Jesus , as does anyone who thinks and sees things mostly from a legalistic point of view. But nowadays, in the age of information and modern science, many leaders of our postmodern era think mostly from a materialistic or reductionist viewpoint.
Even as awesome knowledge keeps pouring in, such as that of the human genome, or findings about quantum physics, or the discoveries of new galaxies, stars, and planets - the fringe of humanity is amazed only at these marvelous new discoveries but not at the Grand Designer who reveals them.
This is the common pitfall of man - to be amazed at the gifts, but not at the Giver. Amazement itself is a wonderful gift from an amazing Giver who reveals great wonders to all men.

"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard."
Psalm 19:1-3

And it is fulfilling that when the next "amazement" comes along, not only because a new-found knowledge or discovery arrives, but because of a wonderful human experience - such as seeing a serene sunset, a beautiful flower, a splendid beach, a fluttering butterfly, or a fluffy snowfall, a magnificent starry night, or an amazing blue sky - it simply completes the experience when we look up and remember : Jesus is Amazing !!!
