FACT FILE: RS-2 Stinger
The Stinger is the smallest and shortest range missile in the
SFMC inventory, but don't let that fool you. It packs a lethal punch for
enemy aircraft with a miniature antimatter charge that can be fused to
detomate in proximity to an aircraft or on impact with it. It is guided
by thermal sensors which track targets via infrared and thermal signature
(which is more precise as it searches out the particular heat level of
the engine so as not to be easily distracted by flare countermeasures).
Primary Function: AAM (Air-to-Air Missile)
Secondary Function: none
Guidance: Thermal Tracking
Propulsion: Microfusion Impulse Engine
Warhead: HE (High Explosive)
Missile Nomenclature
The first letter indicates whether the missile is rail-launched
(R) or surface launched (S). The next indicates the missile's general range
category: S for short, M for medium, and L for long. The number is a designator
assigned by STARFLEET Materiel Control Command. Variants of a certain missile
(i.e. warhead or sensor combinations) may add an additional two or three
letters. For example: RL-70MSD indicates a rail-launched, long-range missile
with multiple submunition dispenser.
