FACT FILE: RM-21 Banshee
The Banshee is the fleet's primary anti-scanner weapon. It is
a medium-range missile that homes in on enemy scanners (either EM, subspace,
or tachyonic) and pursues it's contact relentlessly. In ancient warfare,
the best defense against such a weapon was to simply turn off the emitter.
However, computing power in the 24th century allows the Banshee to calculate
the position of it's target and it's course (if moving). If the emitter
stops, it proceeds to the calculated impact point without delay. And with
it's M/A fuel cell engine, it's velocity is such that even a moving target
has little chance of getting out of the way before it arrives.
Primary Function: HARM (Homing Anit-Radiation Missile)
Secondary Function: none
Guidance: Course-correcting External Beam Rider, Constantly Corrected Impact Point (CCIP)
Propulsion: Matter/Antimatter Fuel Cell
Warhead: HE (High Explosive)
Missile Nomenclature
The first letter indicates whether the missile is rail-launched
(R) or surface launched (S). The next indicates the missile's general range
category: S for short, M for medium, and L for long. The number is a designator
assigned by STARFLEET Materiel Control Command. Variants of a certain missile
(i.e. warhead or sensor combinations) may add an additional two or three
letters. For example: RL-70MSD indicates a rail-launched, long-range missile
with multiple submunition dispenser.
