FACT FILE: RL-55 Dragon Fire
Originally developed solely for the A-78 Dragon program, the
RL-55 is now being adapted into service on all tactical and strategic attack
craft. It's small size is deceptive: it carries a powerful trilithium warhead
capable of massive destructive power. But because it is small, many can
be carried, and it's range of four warhead types makes it adaptable to
any number of missions. It's matter/antimatter fuel cell gives it long-range,
high velocity, and extra destructive power on impact. Like nearly all SFMC
launched ordnance, it has a programmable fuse. It can be guided either
by radar, subspace, gravimetric, infrared, or optical sensors.
Primary Function: AGM (Air to Ground Missile)
Secondary Function: SSM (Ship to Ship Missile)
Guidance: Radar (EM, gravimetric, subspace scanners), Optical
Propulsion: Matter/Antimatter Fuel Cell
Warhead: HE (High Explosive), AP (Armor Piercing), AD (Area Denial), PS (Personnel Suppresion)
Missile Nomenclature
The first letter indicates whether the missile is rail-launched
(R) or surface launched (S). The next indicates the missile's general range
category: S for short, M for medium, and L for long. The number is a designator
assigned by STARFLEET Materiel Control Command. Variants of a certain missile
(i.e. warhead or sensor combinations) may add an additional two or three
letters. For example: RL-70MSD indicates a rail-launched, long-range missile
with multiple submunition dispenser.
