Island of the Crawling Terror #1

This adventure is taken directly from GURPS Atomic Horror.

SUMMARY

The characters arrived on Gozo, a small island in the South Pacific. They were there to check on the feasibility using a new and more powerful radar system that was installed on the island. Gozo was manned by 11 men from the USAF. They were all tired and stressed by the constant failures of the radar system.

Shortly after the arrival of the PCs, the base's senior enlisted man requested that the PCs help in searching for the missing commanding officer, whom the PCs had met the previous night. The only clues to the disappearance of the CO, was a spilled bottle of ink in his quarters and bizarre, spider-like tracks that followed the only stream on the island and led down to the ocean.

These tracks were followed by a team of three, led by the party's own Frank Bellman. The three men were examining the tracks on the beach when they were attacked by a large, eight-legged creature. The struggle was vicious and joined by yet another similar creature. The three man search team managed to get back to the personnel with relatively minor injuries.

Other search parties returned with simlar tales of marauding creatures throughout the island. The group fled into the air raid shelter and armed themselves with the only weapons on the island: three pistols, an automatic carbine, and a flamethrower.

Within a few hours, the creatures had managed to break into the air raid shelter and a hasty retreat was begun to the radar building. While fleeing to the radar building, Bellman was hit by friendly fire. Once at the radar building, the task of deactivating the radar fell upon Captain Williams, and Doctors Taylor and Thorton. The trio encountered a large mutated octopus within the bowels of the radar complex, which, after a prolonged and pitched battle, they were able to dispatch and then deactivate the radar enabling the communications personnel to send a distress message.

Bellman and Williams were able to secure transportation from the island and then led the escape to the beach and the waiting transport plane after creating a diversion to distract the thousands of creatures still roaming the island.

EPILOGUE

Later analysis of the creatures indicate that they were the off- spring of the mutated octopus in the radar building. Within a few days after the death of their mother, they appeared to weaken and then die, indicating some sort of link between them and their mother, which apparently was broken when she achieved room temperature. Several deceased creatures have been sent to various labs across the country for analysis, including the ASTER compound.

After this brief episode, the group returned to Southern California without incident to continue their top secret research.
