Comments:
Entry B just doesn't look right. While I understand the point of a pair of blue hands apparently tearing up the Federation Charter, the hands doing the tearing don't look like they should be tearing. I like the idea of the cover, just not the execution by the artist.
It gives a graphic representation of what the story is about, but doesn't seem up to the quality of the ones higher on my list.
This simply does not work for me.
I'm not sure why, but I'm not too keen on this one.
The shredding of the Federation Charter is genius.
Only on the condition that the hands are changed. They look too passive here. They should look like they're angrily shredding the document, not posing prettily for a glamour hands cover shot.
I like the concept of B the best out of all of them; with better execution it would have been my top choice.
Another tie between B and C. (Really, I'm trying to choose between these things, I just can't.) B wants to look like a ST cover, but just comes out confusing. It leaves the reader wondering, "What is that jibberish? What are all those black marks around the fingers? What happened to the U?"
Most visually representative, close second.
Definitely my favorite. I think it does the best job of showing the impact of Andor's withdrawal from the UFP.
There just seems like there's something missing.
I wouldn't buy D, E, or A, but I might buy B.
Andorian Planetary Council:
Entry B would be my second choice since it shows an element of their folly.
Didn't like the colors, though the design was interesting. With a different font and color scheme, this cover would have been a contender. Appreciated that the Andorian depicted on the cover was kept "anonymous." Not a bad design, simply a weaker choice.
Ian's comments:
I love the drama of this cover! Its difference to the status quo ST covers has the same bold impact upon me as "Immortal Coil", "The Case of the Colonist's Corpse", "Daedalus", "Three" and "Gods Above". When it sits on a shelf among all the floating heads and battling starship covers, it says "Oh, now here's a diffferent one!" Symbolically, the cover tells me so much about the dramas about to unfold, or at least it promises me that it will. There is something rather chilling about the way those blue hands are slowly, deliberately, ripping the document. (Although as someone else noted, angry blue hands would also have been great.) The positioning of all the text and the font and colour choices are perfect.
