Alan-a-Dale concerns a man by the name of . . . well, er, Alan! Robin and his men stop him on his way through Sherwood, only to discover that he is on his way to Nottingham to kill the Sheriff. The reason . . . . the Sheriff is to marry the love of his life, a sixteen year old girl by the name of Mildred. However, the Sheriff is only doing this because he will get land out of it, and effectively marry himself into power.
Robin and his men agree to help Alan get Mildred back, and attempt to rescue her on her way to Nottingham. Robin end up chasing Gisburne through the forest and knocks him off his horse into a bog. Here Robin and Gisburne have a very amusing fight before the Sheriff turns up and Robin swims away. However, when the Sheriff turns up he also picks up Mildred along the way, and foils Robin's plan to save her. With the Sheriff also comes the news that each of the villagers is ordered to pay a hundred marks for harbouring wolvesheads.
As part of another plan, Robin sends Meg, John's girlfriend to Nottingham to tell the Sheriff that Robin and his men will be coming to the wedding. The Sheriff pretends to ignore her, but takes her suggestion seriously. In the meantime Mildred is getting more and more unhappy with the prospect of having to marry Robert de Reinualt. Robin and his men stop the priest that is going to marry the Sheriff, and replace him with Alan. Much and Marion take honey as a wedding present, both of them dressed as 'fair maidens'.
Robin and his men infiltrate the castle dressed as a mixture of priests, women and guards. Alan has to conduct the wedding, but he is very nervous, especially when Mildred recognises him. He does not give a convincing impression of a priest, with the Sheriff giving most of the service himself. The service, however, stops when Will bursts into the room dressed as a guard, and alerts Gisburne to the fact that there are outlaws in the castle. When Gisburne and his guards leave, Robin and his men reveal their true identity to the Sheriff and hold him whilst they free Mildred. In the meantime Much and Marion bring the beehives into the room and place them on the table. When Gisburne returns Nasir and Robin shoot the lids off the hive and the bees escape, allowing Robin and his men to escape in the progress.
Mildred and alan get back together and ride off into Sherwood together. In the meantime, Gisburne and the Sheriff are in the bath trying to soothe the pain from being stung by hundreds of dodgy looking bees!!
