“I can’t believe you’re doing this, Yuugi…I mean, you know this girl’s just a crazed fan!”
Yuugi shrugged. “Well, you never know, Jounouchi-kun, she could be nice.”
The pair sat on a park bench, overlooking a beautiful lake. Earlier that day, Yuugi Mutou had agreed to date a semi-crazed fan of his, who plagued his house with letters and phone calls.
Yuugi leaned back against the wooden bench, staring out across the lake’s mirror surface. It was nearing twilight, and a full moon already rode high in the sky, signaling the end of yet another day. Yuugi smiled to himself.
“Besides, Jounouchi-kun, she’s kinda cute.”
Jounouchi stared at his friend like he had just sprouted a second head. “Right, if you say so. I still don’t like the idea. She’ll NEVER leave you alone now!”
Yuugi shook his head, sighing. “You wouldn’t understand.”
His friend shrugged. “Guess not. Well, she’ll be here any minute. Good luck to ya, pal, and I seriously hope you’re still alive tomorrow morning. Ja.” And with that, he got up and left.
Yuugi shook his head and continued his contemplation of the water. A family of ducks had started swimming through his line of sight, and he watched them idly. A few moments later, he heard a small voice behind him.
“Ano…M…Mutou-san?”
Yuugi turned his head and looked behind him. Sure enough, it was the fan-girl, Ayame. He smiled at her and patted the bench beside him. “Sit”
She did so, sitting straight and rigid, obviously nervous. Yuugi shook his head. A year ago, a girl like this wouldn’t have given him the time of day, and now here was one who was nervous about being next to him.
He smiled at her, then gazed out across the water. “Isn’t it beautiful? The sun sets across the lake, trailing a river of gold over it, turning the sky a myriad of colors. And the moon hovers, waiting for it’s chance to prove it’s worth by lighting the sky with but a fraction of the sun’s power.” He paused and smiled at the girl, who was relaxing a bit, staring across the lake. “Do you know why the moon’s there? To reassure us that the sun is still about, for if the moon didn’t glow, the sun wouldn’t be shining somewhere else.”
The girl looked at him. “I didn’t realize you were so poetic.”
He smiled at her. “I used to come here a lot, just to sit and think and be alone. To be away from all those bullies at school.” Yuugi sighed and stared down at the ground. Yes, that was a year ago, but the memories still hurt.
Ayame struggled with herself, and finally got up the nerve to place a comforting hand on Yuugi’s back. He glanced at her, then smiled encouragingly. She noticed tears streaking his face.
Ayame’s heart broke, and she pulled Yuugi into a hug, before realizing what she was doing. She almost pushed him away again, but felt him hug her back. It was nice, and it was warm. She lost herself in that brief hug.
All too soon he pulled away, and smiled at her. “Come on, I want to show you something.” He stood up, tugging gently at her hand.
Ayame stood and followed him, curious. He stopped in the middle of a large field, filled with bright red and blue flowers. It was beautiful to look upon, with a few butterflies dancing around in the fading light.
“Do you know what this is?” Yuugi whispered in her ear.
Ayame shook her head.
Yuugi smiled, then fell backwards, into the flowers, smiling at her. She shook her head and did the same, lying next to him.
“This, Ayame, is passion. Why else do you think I am so good at games? It is my passion, to be the best at something, so that people would know me as more than just the freak that they bullied. And you know what Ayame? I fulfilled my passion; I am Yugioh, King of Games. And you admire me now, don’t you? But tell me something, a year ago, before I won that tournament, would you have even given me the time of day?”
Ayame thought a moment, then sat up. “No…I wouldn’t have. I see what you’re getting at Mutou-san.”
He glanced at her. “Do you?”
“You want someone who loves you for you, ne? Someone who can look past the title, past the prestige, to the passion in your heart.”
Yuugi nodded. “Sodane. You understand.”
She sat there a moment, before getting up, and without another word, leaving. A few minutes passed. Suddenly another person lay in the flowers next to Yuugi.
“So she was another like the rest, Yuugi?” Jounouchi said from next to him.
“Hai, another like the rest.” Yuugi sighed softly.
Jounouchi shrugged. “Ah well, there’s a million out there, I’m sure you’ll find the one for you.”
Yuugi smiled. “I know I will, arigato Jounouchi-kun.”
