About Ship: The Kodiak was initially classified as a light destroyer when Starfleet Intelligence (SFI) first became aware of the type. Further investigation revealed that the Kodiak was and is a freighter, in the Klingon idiom. In Klingon culture, it is disgraceful to have to rely upon others for defense, so all freighters are equipped with some form of armaments, typically one or two disruptors.

The Kodiak bears a strong family resemblance to the Fox and Wolf frigates. SFI believes that the Kodiak was derived from the Wolf design, by enlarging and extending the central hull. One advantage of this method was the belief for many years that the Kodiak was a heavily-armed warship, held not only by SFI, but by countless potential raiders in and around Klingon space. The fact that the Kodiak carries significant armaments for a freighter reinforced this perception for many years.

The Kodiak is still in front-line service, with suitable modifications to include modern technology. The latest version is believed to be capable of Warp 7 cruise, equal to its never-exceed speed.
