Type: Heavy Fighter or Light Frigate (Sublight)

About Ship: The Kestrel (Romulan designation unknown) was a fast, small Frigate-sized vessel. It was the fastest sublight ship the Romulans fielded during the war. The Kestrel was equipped with a plasma streaming weapon that, presumably, was eventually developed into the plasma torpedo.

Intelligence analysis of the design suggests that the Kestrel is equipped for limited atmospheric penetration. No gear doors are visible, and SFI surmises that it could refuel by diving into the upper atmosphere of a gas giant and opening fuel scoops.

The Kestrel appears to be equipped with warp drives, but no such vessel was ever observed to exceed 0.7c. Apparently, these ships were optimized for sublight operations, and were unable to travel at warp except when carried by a mothership.
