Within hidden valleys accessible only by their tunnels they raise stout and hearty crops and livestock. Their self sufficiency is legendary.
The craftsmanship of their metalworks and jewelry is unequaled in the world.
The title of their king is High Lord, their noble titles go down Keep Lord, Hall Chief and Barrow Master. These denote the size of their underground strongholds. Much of their population lives on or adjacent to the surface, but the Dwarves count political power by the size and defensibilty of their underground strongholds. Though of a noble and law abiding civilization the Dwarves have a custom some find savage. At the higher levels of government they have a ritual Trial by Combat among worthy applicants. This, they believe, keeps their land strong and their people safe.
After the Great Cataclysm many of their northern tunnels and natural caverns that were safe for millenia became infested with monsters and demons. Whole Keeps of Dwarves had to retreat, fleeing with what they could carry south to safety. The High Lord's forces have contained the threat but at a loss of much territory. Today many a young dwarf warrior tries to prove his worth by recovering treasure from still infested tunnels, or devising a way of advancing the kingdom further into abandoned territory. Usually at the cost of his life.
Some Dwarves blame the Cameron family for their loss of territory, but most see it as a sign that they themselves weren't watchful and strong enough. The Great Cataclysm was just a test to their race. Something to be endured to make them stronger. Their leaders now have more opportunities to prove themselves superior and worthy of honor.
If they survive.
