This is the end of the first trilogy in the series. It comes full circle to solve the problems started in GUILTY PLEASURES by Jean-Claude. In this novel Jean-Claude is having a little trouble keeping his power base, so he invites some vamps he knows to come and help him keep power. Also, Jean-Claude is once again pushing the human servant issue with Anita. She doesn't want to be bonded to anyone forever and tries to avoid him as much as possible. However, when a dead body shows up with multiple bite wounds she has to go see him to know if there are any rogue master vamps in town. But, before the night is over she has fought another human servant, a huge snake, and has met a gorgeous guy named Richard who is interested in her but strangely enough she first saw him naked in Jean-Claude's bed. Anita finds it unusual that a human would be so chummy with the monsters but lets it pass because of more urgent problems that need her attention.
One such problem is a new vampire, Alejandro, is in town. Alejandro is also bent on making Anita his human servant because he wants to hurt Jean-Claude. If he can hurt Jean-Claude enough he can take the city away from him. Anita may not be crazy about Jean-Claude but she certainly doesn't think Alejandro will prove to be a better option.
Then there is a new kid working for Animators Inc. Larry is not actually a kid but Anita seems him that way. Bert, her boss, wants Anita to look out for Larry until he learns the ropes. It turns out that Larry isn't only interested in zombie raising, he would like to be a vampire hunter just like her. Anita feels strangely protective of Larry mainly because he is so naive and the fact that he looks like an overgrown Howdy Doody doll doesn't help much.
Anita has still even more obstacles in her path because of Humans First. A radical group that got its start in HAV (Humans Against Vampires) but wanted to use more violent measures in illustrating its point that HAV would not condone. The Humans First followers first approached Anita to help them but she turned them down flat. Then they took to shooting and cussing at her, somehow that didn't win her over either.
Then a master vampire came into town named Mr. Oliver. The oldest vampire Anita has ever heard about much less met. He's one million years old and he didn't even start out human, he's homo erectus for those of you science minded people. Anyway this older vampire also wants to kill Jean-Claude and take over the city because vampire are becoming too wide spread thanks to the Church of Eternal Life (the only church to promise eternity and actual deliver it as far as we know). Mr. Oliver wants to regulate the spreading number of vampires and Anita can't agree with him on that point. She just doesn't know there is one little catch to his plan.
Plus, the usual Blake humor and charm and you have one entertaining book.
