A brief description of all the characters in the show that play important roles in the plots of the episodes. Whatever bar the character is under is the season that the character was introduced:

BUFFY SUMMERS (Sarah Michelle Gellar)

The vampire slayer that this entire show revolves around. She kills vampires, demons, and protects the innocent. She was kicked out of her old school in L.A. because she burnt the gym down since it had vampires in it. She is a role model on the battle field but when it comes to her personal life she has trouble. Her steady boyfriend the vampire Angel lost his soul when they had sex, so she was left hurting. However, she is bouncing back and is ready for anything he can throw at her or at least she thought she could handle anything. At the end of "Becoming" Part 2 she ran away from Sunnydale because she had a huge fight with her mom about being the slayer and she had to push Angel into hell even after he got his soul back or else hell would have taken over earth.

At the end of "Anne" Buffy comes back home to Sunnydale. She has to face many consequences caused by her leaving. Her mother doesn't trust her as much, neither do her friends, at first. She also has to fight the City Council to get back into school. However, she eventually succeeds in getting back into school in "Faith, Hope, and Trick". She had regained most of her friends' trust until "Revelations" when everyone finds out she has been hiding Angel since he came back in "All Men Are Beasts". She has tried being friends with Angel but as Spike points out when he comes back in "Lover's Walk", she can never be just friends with someone she has such strong feelings for.

The hard issue Buffy has recently had to deal with is Faith's descent into the dark abyss of evil. Buffy finally had to acknowledge that Faith went over to the bad guys side in "Enemies" when she discovers Faith is one of the Mayor's flunkies.

WILLOW ROSENBERG (Alyson Hannigan)

Buffy's computer genius friend who can track down anyone or anything on the Internet. Spends most of the first and begining of second season in love with Xander Harris. For as long as she can remember she's lover him but has never gotton up the nerve to tell him. Willow got a boyfriend in the middle of the second season, the guitar playing werewolf Oz, who treated her like she should be treated. However, ever since the episode "Homecoming" in the third season Xander and Willow were sneaking around and making out. Finally, in "Lover's Walk" Cordelia and Oz caught them. Oz forgave Willow for her infidelity in "Amends". Willow is also developing her powers as a witch.

ALEXANDER "XANDER" HARRIS (Nicholas Brendon)

Could best be described as Buffy's adorable doofus friend because that is essentially what he is. He grew up with Willow Rosenberg and they have lived in Sunnydale all their lives. Since, the second episode of the series "Witch" Xander has had a crush on Buffy. In the season finale last year "Prophecy Girl" (check episode guide) he got up the courage to ask Buffy out but she turned him down because she didn't have those type of feelings for him. In the second season he rebounded by going out with Cordelia Chase, first in secret and then finally in public in "Innocence". Xander loses Cordelia, in the third season, when she catches him and Willow making out in "Lover's Walk". Xander is never forgiven by Cordelia. He does get his own episode "Zeppo" about one night where he wasn't part of the main slaying with Buffy and the gang and the trouble he got in. For example, he lost his virginity to Faith in that episode. Willow was hurt by that but wouldn't show it.

RUPERT GILES (Anthony Stewart Head)

Giles is Buffy's watcher which means he's in charge of helping her train and assisting her with slaying. He used to go out with the Computer Science teacher Jennifer Calendar before Angel killed her because she was going to restore his soul. Now, Giles is flying solo but there are rumors that he will get together with Buffy's mom, Joyce. However, in the third season there was first resentment from Joyce in "Anne" that Buffy and him had been close, concerning all the slaying, and she hadn't known about it. Then, they couldn't keep their hand off each other in "Band Candy" leading to lots of embarassment between the two of them, when they finally started acting like responsible adults again. Giles sort of betrays Buffy in "Helpless" for a test for the Watcher's Council, however he redeems himself by saving Buffy's life. He was fired by the Watcher's Council for caring for Buffy like a daughter. However, he still assists the new Watcher.

ANGEL (David Boreanaz)

Angel started out as a good vampire (tell me if that's not an oxymoron) that had a soul because of an old gypsy curse, but after he had sex with Buffy he lost his soul and an evil vampire for the rest of the season. While, he was evil he managed to steal Drusilla away from Spike which made Spike team up with Buffy to stop Angel's plan to bring hell to earth. At the end of "Becoming" Part 2 Willow performed the old gypsy ritual and gave Angel his soul back which would have been great if he hadn't already opened the vortex to hell. Since, he had Buffy had to drive him into the vortex because his blood was the only thing that would close it. Angel was in hell up until "Faith, Hope, and Trick". Someone how Buffy's love and the ring he gave her opened up some type of vortex that allowed him to come back to earth. In "All Men Are Beasts" he runs into Buffy in the cemetary. She helps him get better over the course of a few episodes, however, at the end of "Lover's Walk" Angel is more than capable of taking care of himself and sad because he and Buffy can not be just friends. Angel is part of the sting operation in "Enemies" to see if Faith has gone to the dark side, however, he had to act like his old soul-less self to do it and that hit a little too close to home for Buffy.

JENNY CALENDAR (Robia La Morte)

She was introduced in "I Robot, You Jane" as the computer teacher/neo-pagan. In "Prophecy Girl" she helps to defeat the Master. In the second season it becomes more evident that she and Giles have feelings for each other. Their first date is in "Some Assembly Required" and they continue dating till Jenny is possessed by a demon from Giles' past in "The Dark Age". They make up and start going out again around "Surprise", however that is short lived because Giles finds out in "Innocence" that Jenny is a gypsy sent to watch Angel. She is supposed to make sure Angel's curse is not lifted and that he continues to suffer. Giles is hurt by her deceit and refuses to speak with her. He starts to warm back up to her in "Passion", though, unfortunately Angel kills her in that episode. In "Becoming" Part 2 Angel, Spike, and Dru take advantage of his grief by having Drusilla play mind games with Giles to make him believe she's Jenny to get some information from him. This deeply wounds Giles and since it's not really Jenny, just Dru, we don't get any information about where Jenny is or how her soul is.
