EXCERPT


"Am I the only one?" she asked quietly.
"What?"
"The only Slayer? Are there more? Do they have support groups or anything?"
"There are girls," Merrick informed her, "all over the world, who are different. Who have the potential to become Slayers. But only one is chosen."
"Swell."
"See, Vampire-Kings move about, usually with one or two of their followers to lay the groundwork. They find a community, feed on it, make it their own. Usually this goads the community into a kind of paranoid frenzy, but for some reason, nobody here seems to be paying attention. But, the only ones who can face the Kings-the Slayers-"
He stopped, noticing Buffy had raised her hand.
"What is it?"
"Do I have to take notes on this?"
