22. "The Gift"


This season's finale is a landmark episode, the 100th Buffy!!! It is aalso Buffy's swan song on the WB before she moves to UPN this fall. This clincher has our heroine in a major bind: save the world or save the sister? Buffy informs the Scooby Gang right off the bat that if Dawn dies the whole world is going down with her. Nonetheless, a plan is concocted to ensure that won't happen. The Scooby Gang fights a well and noble climatic fight with Willow managing to free Tara's mind from Glory and Spike being put in charge of Dawn's safety should Buffy perish. The end result is an intense experience that leaves the viewer on the edge of his or her seat. In the end, a demon manages to sneak up to Dawn in the mayhem and start the blood flow. Buffy quickly dispatches the demon but can do nothing about the opening vortex. Dawn is willing to sacrifice herself for the world but Buffy realizes the words she was told earlier about Death being a Gift. Its not that Buffy bringing death to countless vampires and demons is a gift, nor, that killing is a gif. The point or prophecy of the original slayer is Buffy sacrificing herself so that other people may live is the greatest gift and show of love she is capable of. Buffy knows Dawn was made of her flesh so her blood can stop the vortex/inter-dimensional portal as well, therefore, Buffy jumps in to save humanity and the rest of the universe. Our heroine dies and we are left with a sight of her tombstone- Buffy Summers "She saved the world a lot."
