In the first hectic day Buffy nearly give a TA (Riley) a concussion in the bookstore, she meets her constantly perky roommate (Kathy) who snores, is kicked out of her pop culture class, has a nasty psychology teacher, and meets a gang of mean-spirited vampires headed by Sunday, a fashion critic. Buffy even gets lost and she meets a nice guy named Eddie, who is also lost. They share their so far horrible freshman experiences and part ways. Eddie is attacked by vampires and made one. Buffy is worried about him the next day in class, and when she goes to his room she finds all his stuff is gone except for a book that is special to him. She knows he never would have left without the book so she knows something bad is up.
Buffy feels so overwhelmed that she runs to Giles' home to ask advice. There she meets a special British friend of Giles' whose only wearing his dress shirt, her name is Olivia. Buffy is flustered to say the least and quickly leaves, Giles seems uninterested in helping her. Next, Buffy goes home to find her mother is using her room to as a storage place for the gallery's inventory. Buffy feels shut out.
Buffy finally returns to the Bronze where she runs into Xander. He went on a road trip, but car's engine fell out and he was stuck in the middle of nowhere. He washed dishes for most of the summer to pay to have it fixed. He came home to find himself living in the basement and his parents charging him rent. Xander gives Buffy a friendly pep talk to get her motivated to kill the vampires, he tries to quote Yoda but fails horribly.
Buffy and Xander track the vampires to an abandoned fraternity house. Buffy waits on the roof for Xander to go get weapons, the vampires have stolen Buffy's belongings from her room and that ticks her off. She accidentally falls through a skylight and ends up having to fight the vampires. Xander, who magically knows where Buffy's dorm room is, goes there and finds Willow stressing out while Oz and Kathy watch. Xander informs them of the situation without actually having to tell Kathy what's really going on ("...her friends that sleep all day and don't have tans,"). They go into Scooby Gang mode and get some artillery.
Buffy kills the evil Sunday and the Gang helps with a few of her followers. A few get away but the important thing is Buffy's self-esteem is restored. Giles comes up running to kill but is only told to help carry Buffy's stuff back to her room.
Then, one of the vampires that escaped the Gang's raid is running through the forest by the university. A group of people with army pants on and black ski masks take the vampire down by using a stun gun.
