The new watcher Wesley orders Buffy and Faith to investigate Alan's murder. Buffy is scared and wants to tell Giles but Faith won't let her. They go snooping around the Mayor's office and find out that the Mayor and Mr. Trick are buds.
Meanwhile, the Mayor is upset by Alan's death though he can't figure out why Alan left a paper trail of their doings. Mr. Trick gains access to the autopsy report and finds out that Alan was killed by a wooden weapon. Both men are eager to have a Slayer take the fall for it and go to jail.
Angel watches over the police investigation hidden in the shadows. He looks on as they find the alley Alan died in and remembers the night when Buffy's hands were bloody. Angel follows the head officer as he questions Buffy and Faith at their homes.
Willow is giving Buffy the cold shoulder, but they make up. Willow advises Buffy to go to Giles. Buffy does and finds Faith is already there and told a different side to the story. Faith claims Buffy killed Alan. Giles pretends to believe Faith but when he gets Buffy alone he assures her he's just playing along with Faith. They decide to keep everything quiet until they can figure out how they can help Faith. Of course, Wes overhears all this and calls the Council.
Willow, Xander, and Giles sit around with Buffy and try to figure out the best strategy to approach Faith with. Xander insists Faith and he have a connection and he should talk to her. He tells them how he slept with Faith. Willow seems to take it ok and they come to an agreement that Buffy should handle Faith.
Later, we see Willow crying her eyes out in a bathroom stall and Xander moping in the library. Xander goes to Faith's motel anyway. He tries to talk to her but she thinks he is coming on to her and wants more sex. He claims he is geniunely worried about her but she just laughs. She pushes him on the bed and starts strangling him. Angel comes in and knocks Faith out with a baseball bat.
Faith wakes up in Angel mansion, chained to the wall. He tries to talk to her but she isn't cooperative. Buffy is out in the garden and decides to go get some of Faith's things because she might be there a while.
The Mayor and Mr. Trick watch a videotape from a surveillance camera. They see the Slayers breaking into the office. The Mayor doesn't want to take a chance that the Slayers will try to stop his plans so he orders Mr. Trick to get rid of them.
Faith and Angel start talking and it seems like Angel is gettting through to her when wes busts in with help. They knock out Angel, unchain Faith, and then put her in shackles. They are taking her to England to face disciplinary action from the Council. Faith escapes from the van they are transporting her in.
Wesley goes to the gang and explains Faith's escape. They all split up to look for her. Buffy goes to the docks whre she tries to get Faith to come with her. A crate is about to fall on Faith when Buffy pushes her out of the way and is hit by that same crate. Vampires ambush Faith. Buffy gets out from under the crate and is attacked by Mr. Trick. Faith kills the vampires on her and stakes Trick before he can bite Buffy.
In the library the next day Buffy and Giles talk. Giles says they are not going to send Faith to England since FAith voluntarily came came back with Buffy. They believe Faith is on the way to recovery.
We see the Mayor in his office and someone knocks on his door. It's Faith. She tells him since Trick is dust he has a job opening and she would like to fill it.
