Chapter 25: To each their sentence

As dumbfounded as she could be, Christine again attempted, "Erik, I swear I'm telling you the truth! I was a fool in the past, but now I know. I love you."

"I don't want your love." For the indifference in his voice, and a certain share of amazement at his own conclusion and perception, I knew for once that it was not a game he was playing.

"But Erik...and our music...?"

"That is all you could ever give me, Christine. Music. Well, that I can have on my own. I can share the marvelous pieces of all the immortal musicians. I can write my own. I can find new inspiration, and write another opera. Oh, and don't delude yourself - every decade or so a new soprano with a sweet angelic voice like yours will be singing in some Opera House in this world, to please our ears. Maybe she will go on with her studies and will win the world for herself, become a selfish Prima Donna. Or maybe she will always be forgotten in the chorus, until she grows too old for the theater or until she finds a wealthy man to marry." He completed carelessly, and then he made his point even more clear, although a little sad,

"What I want is not for you to give me."

The riddle was tossed on the air, and my mind ran wildly to doubt what my heart seemed to know.

"Then who can?" She stuttered, nothing making sense anymore, "You... you are in love with someone else?"

"Go away, Christine. Leave my house. Run away from this accursed Opera." His voice had changed from maniacal to melancholic.

As she seemed to not take an initiative, he yelled, "Go!"

I heard her footsteps, the sound getting dimmer, until he said, alone,

"And leave fast. Because tonight this Opera will fly damn high!" Chapter 26 - coming soon!
