Le Isole Eolie
(The Aeolian Islands)
The Aeolian Islands gets it's name from Aeolus, Lord of the Winds. According to the poet Homer, Aeolus had his kingdom here, and kept the winds in one of the many caves on one of the islands in this archepelago, just north of Sicily. The Aeolian Islands is made up of seven major islands, Volcano, Lipari, Salina, Filicudi, Alicudi, Panarea, and Stromboli. Both Volcano and Stromboli have active volcanoes on them. Stromboli's volcano spouts off about four times an hour.
These pictures were taken by my parents who just recently returned from the islands.
Beaches of Volcano
Volcano is known for its mud baths and warm beaches and the smell of sulpher. As I mentioned above, it is one of the only active volcanoes in the archepelago. You can take the walk up to the mouth of the crator and take a peek and get a good view of the island and surrounding area.
