The Duchy of Pittsburgh is a small kingdom ruled by Lord Travis Smiley, the 12th Lord Smiley, and great-great grandnephew of the Baron Smiley of Columbia's Baron's Folly Wall. While his branch of the family was originally a cadet branch of the Smiley Family, it came into prominance following the loss to Columbia more than 100 years ago. Besides the loss of more than half his army, Baron Smiley's loss to Columbia ended his family branch's rule of the kingdom. Lord Smiley's family has used their rule to expand both the army and the kingdom itself. Besides the main city of The Pitt (Pittsburgh), there are also several outlying towns that provide resources and finished goods to the main city. Each of these towns are semi-independent, with their own types of government and defense forces. The most influential of the outlying towns is Uniontown, the ancestral home of the Smiley family. Its principle exports are armaments for the army, and personnel for Lord Smiley's personal guard.
Geographically placed between the Coalition States and the Baltimore City-States, the Duchy threads a middle line between the two realms. While much of his sympathies lies towards Baltimore, mostly because of the large Dwarf and D-Bee population of the Duchy, Lord Smiley has found the actions of Baltimore's Secret Service very troublesome of late. While many of the strange occurances and disappearances couldn't be traced back to Baltimore, their obvious benefits to Baltimore has brought much heat down on Lord Smiley both from the Coalition States and elements of the Federation of Magic. While he has been able placate much of their concerns, he is very much aware that he will have to come to a decision soon as to which side he is going to support.
