When the events of the Apocalypse occurred, the Amish, like many thousands of others around the world, were Sealed inside of their churches. 80 or so years later, the Sealing ended, and they returned to the world to find everything gone. They quickly learned about the hazards of Rifts Earth and were nearly wiped out until they learned about the special properties of churches. While the various Amish villages got in contact with each other, one of their scouts made a miraculous discovery.
Imbedded in one of the nearby hills were several U.S. Navy vessels that washed inland with the various tsunamis that hit the American East Coast. The small fleet consisted of 2 cargo freighters, 4 destroyers, 1 cruiser, and 2 submarines. Recognizing a God-send when one is presented to them, the Amish moved and combined all of their villages into this one town near the site. In a Council of Elders, the Amish decided to adopt these modern weapons to help them survive.
Once again on Rifts Earth, communities either have an adaptation to survive in the environment (magic, psionics, cybernetics, etc…) or they adopt technology to survive. Ironically, here it is almost 200 years later, and once again their equipment is considered antiques, ultra-tech, but antiques non-the-less. While there are some psionicists and magic-users among them, very few are born to the Amish due to their distance from a ley-line. The nearest ley-line is at least 200 miles away. Because of this, they are rarely bothered by magic or MDC creatures nowadays, their biggest threat are creatures that fly overhead and attack the town on the spur of the moment. However, every once in a while, they are attacked by vampires and other human-spawned demons.
The main city of the Neo Amish is a small, walled town surrounded by several fields of wheat, corn, barley, hay, and other assorted vegetables. The town looks like it could hold several thousand people, and it is dominated by a huge church. The church is done in a Gothic style similar to many of the oldest churches in Baltimore. Everything is made out of cut granite blocks and steel. Besides these oldish looking buildings, there is also what appears to be a barracks, a parking lot, and a radar center on the edge of town. There are also several missile launchers on the edge of town. Besides the surface barracks and command center, there are also several underground hardened garages that house the various Abrams tanks, Stryker APCs, and Humvee scout vehicles.
Because of their small numbers, all Neo-Amish must undergo four years of military service to help defend the community. As such, in times of extreme crisis, fully 80% of the population could be armed and ready for service. If such a time of crisis should arise, and the harvest had to go to waste, the town could survive for up to three years on surplus supplies stored in underground refrigeration bunkers. In times of emergencies, it is possible for the Neo-Amish commanders to call the SentryBots that guard the U.S. Navy vessels to help defend the town. All commanders above the rank of major have the authorization and security codes to do so. As a matter of neccesity, the Council of Elders also have the security codes needed to command the SentryBots.
The Neo-Amish are governed by the Council of Elders, made up of the seven oldest members of the community, and six members elected by the community. The seven unelected members of the Council serve for life and designate their own successors, who take office when they die, or retire. The six elected members serve for four years and are elected in a general election of all community members over the age of 25. While the Pastor of the community is usually on the Council of Elders, it is not a requirement that he be on the Council. In the rare event that one of the unelected Elders is found incompetant by the rest of the Council, the Elder will be removed from office, the designated successor will be disqualified, and the oldest elected Elder will take their office. The vacated elected office will then be filled by a general election. The removal of an unelected Elder is a very rare occurance, as most Elders tend to retire, or die, before such an action needs to be undertaken.
With no organized opposition against their existance, the Neo-Amish have very little worries. The few towns and villages that they know of have friendly relations with them and, in some cases, they trade with.
Other than the fact that they are several hundred miles from the ocean, the warships are perfectly intact. If they could be removed from the ground, some lucky state would find themselves in possession of a half dozen near mint condition Pre-Rifts warships.
