(The Original Timer)

The original Timer was created by Quinn Mallory. In an attempt to create an antigravity device Quinn inadvertently discovers a gateway, what is referred to as the Einstin-Rosen-Pudoski bridge, the entrance to a wormhole that runs between worlds. When you step inside you slide though to another universe completely distinct and separate from your own, all coexisting on the same multidimensional space time continuum.
Originally the timing device was designed to return people or items back though the vortex. However Quinn opened the vortex early on another dimension before the timer reached zero. The early access corrupted the program and erased their home earth (Earth Prime) coordinates.
After a few slides the timer became badly damaged.  The Sliders couldn't open the gate at will anymore.  So the Professor and Quinn made some calculations based on The Helix Spiral, a ten dimensional form of Witten's index theorem, That suggests there will be a single window of opportunity on each Earth they visit.  A moment in time when the weakened powers of the timer will still allow them to access the gateway. The window would be different on each Earth they visit - mere minutes till it arrives on some, several months on others. They also re-rigged the timer to serve as a countdown device, telling them how long till the window on each Earth they visit. If the window comes and goes and they don't access the gate it's 29.7 years to the next window opportunity.
One last modification was made to this timer by Logan St.Clair (see 2nd Timer), it was to replace the timers geographic spectrum stabilizer, that used a laser gyro, with her timers stabilizer, that used a more flawed whispering gallery. The result was an increase in the radius where the Sliders would land, from the original two miles to that of four hundred miles.
