Background: Having a quite happy childhood, this son of a pilot never had much problems. He could always get along with his sister and parents. From his early childhood, he developed an interest for his fathers work, who was a pilot on a freightervessel. His parents noticed that and encouraged that. Richards learned how to fly a shullte at the age of  14. He wasn't the best student in the world, because his mind always drifted towards space. One day a Starfleet officer came to his school, telling all about the adventures out in space. Hearing the stories of this officer, young Richards wanted to apply to the Academy instantly, but he was to young. He finished High School and left for San Fransico.
He attended the Academy from 2358-2363. It took him 5 years, because he had failed all the courses containing anything remotely medical, which he dreads. He passed all his exams the next year. He then was assigned to the U.S.S. Freedom doing what he does best; piloting. After getting the ship out of an asteroid field while being under attack by 2 Romulan ships, he was promoted to lieutenant (jg). He was promoted to lieutenant a year later. He as transfered a few months after his last promotion to the U.S.S. Dublin. This ship was assigned to fight at Wolf 359, but couldn't due to engine trouble. Richards considers himsef lucky not to having to "die at that Godforsaken outpost" by the hands of "those powered up lawnmowers". A year later he was promoted to lieutenant-commander and left the ship two months later. Two months after he left, his successor crashed the ship  in the same asteroidfield where Richards got the U.S.S. Freedom out safely. He was assigned to the U.S.S. Icarus in 2370. A year later was offered a position on the new U.S.S. DeRuyter as First Officer. He accepted and was promoted to commander in the way.
Although Richards officialy doesn't pilot anymore, he is known to take over the helm whenever the ship nneds some nifty flying.
Captain Castle welcomes this, saying that Richards is "the best damn pilot in the universe".
