Below is one of the sketches I have for a gypsy outfit. Due to lack of time from commissions, job hunting, and school, I decided to hold off on the older, more complicated design. So I came up with this one, which looks less utilitarian, yet is more so. I had this *new* design in my head for a while, but finally sketched it out. I also had some of the material already. (Like the skirt material.) Unfortunately, I forgot to add the embellishments in the sketch, like the trims, but that's okay. It adds extra flexibility.
The final skirt will actually be for an Entertainer / Minstrel / Magician style outfit for me to use while working at Mom Crosewl's Magic Shop during the Maryland Renaissance Festival season.

Below is the skirt, pinned and unstitched. I'm using a traditional and somewhat period cutting technique in which you cut only straight lines. No curves. When sewn together, the bottom of the skirt will have a natural curve. This technique (which I've heard of from several sources) wastes far less material than the curve cut skirts.
I first only had the main panels pinned together, but the skirt lacked the fullness I wanted. So I'm using the half triangular scraps (pinned together to make full triangles) as insets/gores to add the fullness and an extra splash of color. So far, I like how it's turning out, both in fullness and in color mixture. I will stitch it together after I finish the doublet that I am working on as a gift.
 
23 July 2002:
I finished stitching the skirt in May, but never had the chance to take a real picture. Honestly, I would like a better picture of the skirt to show the different colors. I wore it to a small festival and it worked great. Just need to put together an outfit for it.
This picture was actually taken October 2003. I really like how this outfit turned out.
The previous picture was awful.
