5x03: Redux II 11/09/97

Redux II just vaulted to the top of my favorites list! There's so much stuff I can say about this one....where do I start?

Scully is incredibly lucky--Mulder, her knight in shining armor, exposed his alive-ness to see her in the hospital, risking his job and being accused in Scott Ostelhoff's murder. There's nothing that boy won't do for her--even consider joining up with the Consortium. The bond between them goes to a new level as Scully on her deathbed asks Mulder to place the blame for the murder on her. Of course he won't. This episode was very reminiscent of One Breath (that's very good!) as Mulder faces tough choices and opposition from all sides as Scully lies dying. The scene where Mulder breaks down by Scully's bed reminded be of the similarly beautiful scene from One Breath after Mulder chooses seeing Scully one last time over bloody revenge.

Apparently Scully's cancer is cured from the microchip, though not nearly enough questions were resolved in the torturous ending. I would have liked to have seen more of Scully's feelings during this ep. She was dying, after all, and the short scene where she tearfully discusses her faith with her mother just wasn't quite enough.

The mythology takes some huge twists as Section Chief Blevins suddenly is revealed as the leader of the conspiracy. Blevins' accusation and subsequent murder came out of nowhere; it's hard to tell what the mythology will do in the future. As I suspected, Skinner was on Mulder and Scully's side all along. Samantha's appearance along with the revelation that CSM may be her father threw us all, but I don't believe that was truly Samantha. Remember the clones from End Game and Herrenvolk? Her appearance and disappearence was too convenient for CSM's plans. Her accent was awfully strange too.

For the first time, I felt sorry for the Cigarette-Smoking Man as, bleeding from a gunshot wound, he clasped a photo of a young Fox and Samantha. He's obviously not dead, since no body was recovered and this is The X-Files. As much as all we fans hate him, I like CSM's character and hope to see more of him soon.

Redux II was like a roller coaster: it incited fear, bliss, panic, and excitement in a fabulous adrenilane rush. This episode is an example of what The X-Files is at its finest, and made me proud to be a fan.

Chris must be leading us up to something fabulous in the movie. If the last two eps are examples of what we can expect for Season 5, we're headed for a great year!

Quotes

Mulder: (to CSM in a hospital) Please tell me you're here with severe chest pains.

Mulder: Hey Scully, how about those Yankees, huh?

Scully: Mulder, if I could save you....let me.

Mulder (to Scully): Have the father say a few Hail Mulders for me.
