Carey- the Prodigal Son

played by Eric Lively

Carey Bell, oldest son of Ned and Irene, makes his first appearance in "Siren" although he is mentioned briefly in several previous episodes. Presumably he was busy bombing at business school during the show's first season. It's probably safe to say that he's a bit of a dreamer. He has decided to drop out of college and to play guitar in Molly's band. Neither idea appeals much to his poor parents who will now have to pin their hopes of higher education on Clu.

Carey is a romantic at heart, but he has the attention span of a grasshopper. He's probably about eighteen or nineteen, which makes him barely a year or so older than Clu. Siblings so close in age rarely get along well, but Clu has described Carey as being "the coolest". In the absence of his own little brother he occasionally assumes the elder sibling role for Jack and Fiona (and later Annie too).

As season two progresses he seems more and more open to Fiona's unusual ideas. This could be due to the fact that, like Clu, he has an almost child-like ability to believe in the improbable, unlikely, and downright impossible. Although he requires explanations for the weirdness that he encounters, Carey doesn't necessarily require the explanations to fit preconceived notions. If this includes accepting ghosts and gremlins, he's game.

In season three Carey is beginning to show signs of increased maturity and level-headedness. This does not, however, overshadow his ability to clown around with Clu and Jack when the occasion arises or inhibit his easy acceptance of bizarre explanations. He continues to dispense his own version of unorthodox, unconventional wisdom and provides his extended family with dependable support even when he doesn't fully understand what's going on.
