Metamorphosis2

Mutations

Maybe the metamorphosis isn't a science fiction story in the most accurate meaning of the term, since there is no rational cause that explain why Gregory Samsa transforms overnight (literally) into a grotesque giant insect. It's much more a surrealistic parable that some people may consider tragic, but behind it there are situations that could be even humorist. Or isn't it comic, in some circumstances, the grotesque?

In Science fiction there are many causes that can provoke mutations in human beings: Atomic explosions, Radioactive sea fogs, dilutious drugs combined with a watertight compartments, snake poison manipulated by the classic mad doctor, teleportation cabins with insects inside, toxic wastes, X rays, gamma rays (between others) and, of course, the modern genetic manipulation that was previewed by H.G. Wells in Dr. Moreau's Island.
