Entomologic Attack

Alien Fauna

This is the last thing that has came out from my runaway mind. A space coloniser looks frightened, as a huge insect is about to detach his head -helmet included - from the rest of his shaky body. A dantesque scene, in which several diagonals overlap progressively, increasing the inner dramatism of the action and accentuating the movement sensation.

The glasses in the helmet have assigned a transparent raytrace material, which reflects in a photorealistic way the anguish rictus of the explorer. Actually, the camera is into the head but as it has the normals back to front, it's only visible on the reflection.

The alien is, in fact, the interpretation of a real insect known by the complicated name of "Acanthocorydalus", a close relative of the Lion Ant.

The resource of using insects to perform extraterrestrial beings is very diffused in the basic schemes of Science Fiction. We just can take a glimpse on Paul Verhoeven's fantastic film, STARSHIP TROOPERS, to realise the photogenic aspect of those bugs. If we look at them closely, we’ll realise of its frightening aspect. When working on the legs I had real problem. I didn't understand its structure only following illustrations, therefore, as insects are connected with shellfishes, I appropriated a huge crab before my own relatives devoured it.
