Klaus Lans was raised religious.  This, coupled with an unnoticed mental instability, led to Lans' belief that humans were naturally superior to the sprites and Anthros that populated the Metaverse, since humans were responsible for the sprites and Anthros' creation.

Lans formed a pharmaceutical company, TruPharm Incorporated, which (despite its relative success) was little more than a front for his religous terrorist group, the True Force.  Lans, as the CEO of the company, maintained a "no nonhumans need apply" policy, which served for some criticism that he repeatedly ignored.

During one of his night sprees of random violence against nonhumans, however, Lans and a small gang of his ran into a sprite called Lean, who fought back with such viciousness that it exposed Lean's viral nature.  Lans lost his right eye as a result of the attack, causing him to grow to hate nonhumans even more.  He had his eye replaced with a cybernetic ocular plate, which glows red (and can also shoot lasers).

Lans began to call himself Lazarus and became the Metaverse's most prominent racist recluse.  He tried a few plans to rid the Metaverse of nonhumans, first trying to drive a wedge between humans and nonhumans by using mind-altering drugs to turn selected nonhumans into suicidal mass murderers, but this plot was foiled and the plot exposed.  This led to Lazarus planning what he termed the "Final Contingency," something which remains unclear.

Lazarus targeted a few humans in his campaign, however, humans who had become "traitors to the species."  Specifically, these people were David Gabbiani, his former Chief of Computer Security for TruPharm, and his writer friend Quinn Rentack, who had targeted Lans in his news-sheet column.

What the "Final Contingency" is and what it means for the Metaverse both remain unclear at the moment, but whatever it is, it is most definitely chilling and not good.
