Jani and Gerigiath 's record My first meeting with
Jani On my tour around the Weyr I have met some very interesting folk, but none so full of life as Jani. Upon entering her weyr I are met by a young woman only about 16 turns, but mature for her age. She had fire red hair that might just reach to her shoulder and green eyes. At a glance I knew she spent the better part of her time in the sun for all the freckles on her face and arms. She was wearing a comfortable white, short-sleeved tunic and brown pants, but no shoes. She sat cross-legged on a chair near a small table at one side of the weyr. Nearby were her sleeping furs jumbled in a heap as if she never made time to straighten them. A well worn dragon couch was at the other side, but there was no dragon in the weyr. Seeing me enter, she rose and I could see that she was quite tall. "Hi, my name is Jani," she introduced herself. "Nice to meet you," I replied giving her my name. "How do you like this weyr?" Jani asked with a twinkle in her eye. Stumbling over a reply, I managed to say, "It's big, and ... empty" "Yes, I have not Impressed a dragon yet but I am a candidate at Draconia Weyr. There is supposed to be a hatching soon." Totally changing the topic Jani questioned me, "have you met my sister Kirina? She is the record keeper at this weyr. Our mother was a greenrider at Ista. Lucky for us we stayed in the weyr and were not fostered out - although, the headwoman, Jeri, was the one who really raised us. Our father was a brownrider." Walking to the entrance and signaling for me to follow, she pointed to a cave near the lower caverns, "You should go see Kirina. The records room is just over there." "So, why did you come to sand on the sands?" I asked as we walked back into the weyr. "Two reasons. One: I was invited, and two: If I stayed, I would have had to explain to a blue rider AGAIN why I would not be his weyrmate. I just didn't like him. AND, he didn't like me drawing! He thought I should spend my time oiling his dragon, or airing his sleeping furs." Almost as an afterthought she adds, "as if his arms were painted on." Looking closer at the table you can see that she is a very accomplished artist. Many of the people you have met at this weyr are sketched in black and white along with many of the dragons. "Mabey someday I will let Kirina put my drawings in the records room, but not yet." she explained. The shy artist Excited to visit the new white hatchling, you bound up the steps and into the weyr. The entrance is quite neat, and the dragoncouch supports the sleeping form of the white hatchling. From further back in the cave you hear the voices of two women. Moving closer you recognize the two sisters, Kirina and Jani standing next to a small table. Both have fire-red hair and green eyes. Kirina, at 25, is the elder and is the resident record keeper in the Weyr. Jani is the younger, and in her 16th turn. They look very much alike and both have freckles from prolonged exposure to the sun. The major difference between the two is that Kirina wears boots while Jani prefers to go barefoot. In the corner is the messy part of the weyr with sleeping furs and clothes strewn all over. "Kirina, I can't let you take my drawings," Jani nervously holds them tighter to her chest. "I don't see why not? They're perfectly accurate. A Weyr should have drawings of its dragonriders and their dragons in the Records Room," Kirina tries to convince her younger sister. "But what if they don't like them? What if they do? Remember the artist back at Ista? He was good and the weyrfolk always begged him to sketch this or that." "Is that what you are afraid of," Kirina asked beginning to smile, "that they are good and you'll have no time to take proper care of Gerigiath?" "I suppose so," Jani admitted glancing towards her sleeping white hatchling on her dragoncouch. It is then that she notices your presence. "Oh, hello. I didn't realize we had a visitor." Embarrased that you didn't announce yourself earlier and have been caught eavesdroopping, you stammer, "I, uh, just came to see the new white dragon. I just got here." Picking up one of the drawings and holding it out to you, Kirina asks, "Here, tell me what you think of this." You immediately recognize Weyrleader M'lek and his bronze Ferth in the drawing. "This is fantastic you tell Jani. Has he seen it?" "No, Jani is afraid she's too good," Kirina explains. "That's what I gathered," you admit guiltily remembering your eavesdropping. Getting an idea you suggest, "But think of it this way. If you let Kirina show your drawings, and you get too many requests for more, you have an excuse now that your a dragonrider. No one will think twice if you tell them you're too busy with your dragon." Stubbornly, Jani agrees, "I guess, but I still would rather keep them here." A soft crooning from the other side of the room takes Jani's attention for a moment. "Gerigiath is hungry; I have to feed her," Jani says as she stacks up her drawings. "Kirina we will have to finish this discussion later," she tells her sister. Walking towards the cave opening and a very hungry white dragon, she says, "It was nice talking to you too. You'll have to come visit again when Gerigiath's past the eternally hungry stage."
