Girdra and Kiruth's record The Weaver As I entered the cave, my eyes were drawn to the lovely woven tapestries on the walls of the cave. The workmanship was that of a well practiced Journeywoman. There was even a thick woven rug placed over the cold stone dragon couch for insulation. At the rear of the cave was a small cot adorned with sleeping furs. Next to the cot was a weavers lomb. Seated in one of the two chairs nearby was Girdra, the weyr weaver. She was a delightful young woman who was around 18 turns old. She was of medium height and build, with thick black hair that was cropped short. Her brown eyes were soft and gentle and her smile was innocent. She wore the journeyman knot of the weavercraft on the shoulder of her yellow and brown dress. "Why, thank you," Girdra replies modestly. "As you know, I love to weave. I have made every piece you see here. I was working towards a Master's knot when the Weyrwoman asked me to be a candidate for the hatching." " That's wonderfu! Any dragon would be honored to live here. " "I hope so," Girdra smiled. "Well, I guess I'd better tell you something about my background for those records of yours." "I have lived in the weyr for a few turns now helping the Weyr Folk with their techniques. Since I enjoy working alone, and this cave was vacant when I arrived, the Weyrwoman let me live here. It's also nice to have a place to keep my loom. "Before I came to the Weyr, I lived in a small cothold near Fort Hold. I am the oldest of 5 daughters. My mother was a masterweaver and my father a mastertailor so you can imagine how they worked together to create the finest fashions to be had. The taught their children their crafts." The Hatchling A few days after the hatching, I went to visit Girdra and her newly Impressed Green Kiruth. We all seemed to arrive at the same time. "Come on Kiruth, we're almost there," she speaks soothingly to the baby green, "Yes, I know you are tired." Seeing you, she says to her friend, "Kiruth, it looks like we have a visitor!" "I don't mean to intrude, I was just visiting the new hatchlings...." I started to explain. "Don't apologize. Since she just hatched and ate," Girdra said as I notice the bulge of food in her stomach, "she is very ready for a nap." After settling Kiruth on the dragon couch, Girdra drew me over to her loom and the two chairs next to it. When she sat down, Tily, her large black feline lept to her lap. Tily "Tily is not sure just what to make of our new friend," she said glancing towards the sleeping Kiruth. But he gets braver every day venturing closer and closer. You notice that Kiruth's hide is clean and shiny with a recent oiling. "She looks so beautiful there," you comment. "Oh, it's not that easy keeping her clean and fed. Dragons are a lot of work, but they sure are worth it!" After conversing for a few more minutes you rise to leave so as not to disturb Kiruth's slumber, you comment, "It looks like you have your hands full with these too." "It's a good thing this weyr is accessible from the weyr bowl and not too far from the kitchen. It makes a world of difference." Dragonet Girdra lovingly smeared the soothing numbweed and oil on the soft hide of her precious Kiruth. Now, no longer a hatchling, Kiruth was beginning to stretch her wings and hunt for herself. With that, came the scrapes and bruises that hurt both dragon and rider. With their minds both linked together, they each felt the joys and pains experienced by the other. The latest injury was Kiruth's using her muzzle to break her fall. Carefully, Girdra cleansed the tender flesh and soothed the pain with the marvelous numbweed. "There. All finished Kiruth. Do try to be more careful." "It was the ground that reached up to slap me. I was only flying above it in the air." Kiruth's humor always made Girdra giggle. "Come on. Let's get you back to the weyr now." Clumsily, but without further incidence, Kiruth managed the short flight back to her weyr while Girdra followed on foot. Still to young to ride, Girdra longed for the day she could soar on the back of her beloved dragon. When she finally reached the weyr, she found her feline, Tily, curled up between Kiruth's forepaws, the both of them fast asleep. Although once terrified of the new hatchling, Tily had warmed up to her and now enjoyed curling up next to the warm body of the tiny dragon. Careful, so as not to wake her friends, Girdra tip-toed to the back end of the decorated weyr to follow their example with a much needed nap. Weyrling As Girdra got ready, she stole a glance at her sleeping dragon. Kiruth was curled up on the lovely carpet woven for her dragon couch and sleeping soundly. Well, not for long. Quickly, Girdra changed from her comfortable dress to more practical riding gear. Today was an exciting day. Since they had been permited to ride their dragons, the weyrlings were sent on all sorts of interesting errands so that they would learn the proper coordinates to transfer anywhere on Pern. Today, their special errand was to search out possible candidates for the next clutch. Both queens could rise at any time, and it wouldn't hurt to bring in a few more possible riders. "Ah, Kiruth. You're awake. Let's get these flying straps on you so we can get on our way." Quickly, Girdra fastened the straps around Kiruth's strong neck. "Are we going to Keroon today?" asked a sleepy Kiruth. "Yes," answered Girdra, "And after we have visited the small cots, we will go on to Nerat. I know it's a lot to cover, but it gets us out flying!" Bidding her feline, Tily, farewell, Girdra grabbed her helmet and and climbed aboard her beautiful green dragon. Tily Gracefully, Kiruth sprang from the ledge and flapped her ever-growing wings carrying them higher and higher until they winked between.
