B'dian and Ogrith's record Rocks! Approaching the weyr, I could see a figure seated on the ledge looking out accross the Weyr bowl. Drawing closer, I recognized him as Beldian, the Farmercraft apprentice that was found on search. His unruly red main was blowing wild in the wind that had sprung up. Silently, I hoped that this young lad of 15 turns will discover girls and thus change his appearance for the better. "Beldian, it's good to see you again," I said as I extended my hand in greeting. Rising to his feet and covering my hand in Pernese fashion, he answered, "It's good to see you too." "So what do you see?" I asked as I looked curiously out in the direction the Beldian had been previously looking. "ROCKS! All rocks! Not a green thing among them!" "What's wrong with a few rocks?" I pointed out. With his green eyes dancing, he admitted, "Well, nothing, but I LIKE green things. My life was growing green things before I was found on search. I'm just not sure I'm cut out to be a dragonrider. I mean, I would love to Impress a young hatchling, but it will take a while to get used to rock instead of lush vegetation." "I think, when you Impress," I counciled, stressing the fact that I thought he would Impress, "you should put in for a transfer to one of the more tropical climates. That way, you'll have your dragon and your greenery too!" Relief filled the young man's face as the possibility of my proposition registered in his mind. Hatching! Beldian stood with the rest of the candidates on the hot sands. The eggs were rocking violently now and he knew that any minute he might become a dragonrider. One by one, the eggs popped open and the awkward little hatchlings stumbled towards waiting arms. One by one, they past him. Frustrated and scared that he would not be chosen, Beldian moved closer, determined that he would catch the attention of one of them. Then, three greens, a brown and a bronze hatch all at once. Determined that this would be his chance, he watched in dismay as two of the greens picked two giggly girls and the brown and bronze waltz past to the lads behind him. As tears begin to form, he looks up trying to make them stop. Then, Beldian felt the collision against his legs that almost knocked him over. Looking down, his eyes make contact with the most beautiful dark green dragon he has ever seen. "I am Ogrith," a soft voice speaks in his mind. Ogrith at her hatching Sleeping B'dian couldn't believe how fast Ogrith was growing. In the past sevenday, she had grown at least two or three handspans or more. Evidently this was why her apatite could not be satisfied, and her soft hide needed constant attention. Beaming with pride, he watched her as she carefully made herself comfortable on a warm rock. "I am warm and full, and have been oiled. It is now time for a nap. I am very sleepy," she told him. "I couldn't tell," he replied, laughing. Ogrith Moving over to where she lay curled, he gently stroked her eye ridges, soothing her to sleep. She was pretty. Her dark green color would blend in perfectly with trees. But, that was in his past now. Once a proud member of the farmercraft, he enjoyed plants and trees and life. Then, as a candidate, he had become depressed and actually sulked for lack of greenery. All that had changed the moment he looked into Ogrith's eyes. Sure, he couldn't wait for the day they could fly, and possibly transfer south, but then, it didn't matter as much, now that he had Ogrith. Pushing back his stray locks of bright red hair, he realized that it was way past time to get it cut. Pending Haircut Again, I found myself outside the Lower Caverns in the weyr bowl. The weyrlings had just finished practice and the whole place was busy with everyday tasks. In the distance, I could just make out the form of senior queen, Raenith carefully guarding her eggs on the Sands. A dark green dragon and her rider landed not far from where I was standing. Her rider was a young man, of somewhere near 16 turns. He had fire red hair that was long, tangled and windblown. As he walked towards me to enter the Lower Caverns, I admired his graceful green take off. Ogrith "You green is gorgeous. I've not seen that dark of shade very often," I told him. "Ogrith's one of a kind. Now, have you seen Lorin? It's way past time for a haircut!" "I think I saw her inside," I said, walking with him. "Ogrith told me this morning that I needed to do something with my hair. I never really cared much, but when she mentioned it, I kind of realized she was right. And if she asked me to do something about it, it must be really bad." Keeping my comments to myself, I finally find Lorin, carefully turning her fire-lizard egg by the hearth. Seeing me and the greenrider approach, she rose to her feet. "Lorin, do you have a few minutes to give me a haircut?" Surprized, but masking it well, I noticed, as she raised one eyebrow, "Certainly... Let me get my shears." |
