Asteroids
Asteroids by Atari
Players: 1-2
YOR: 1986?(copyright was 1984, but I don't think was released until '86)
I actually found this game several months before I got my 7800. At first
I thought it was a 2600 game, but then I saw it said 7800. And I only got it
for .50, which was a good deal for me.
Well, how do I start? After playing this for a couple minutes, I was
quite impressed. The same retro gameplay is there, but there's a couple cool
options for two players, such as team or competitive play. There are 4
difficulty levels for each of the four modes(single, two, competitive, or
team play). The one thing I miss are shields(unless there is a way?), but
I can live without them.
I only have one other 7800 game to compare to, so I feel the graphics
are pretty good. They look real cool. There are several different colors
of rocks, and they look shaded as well. The 7800 throws sprites around the
screen quite nicely. Compared to any Nintendo 8-bit game, I think this is
a notch above. The graphics are really detailed, it's fast, and are very
colorful. The sound is cool too, the background noise(I don't know what to
call it, since it's not exactly music) sounds like a remix of the 2600
version. And the sound effects are also nicely done. The control is right
on as well, and it's very fun. I like it better than any other version
on Asteroids I've played(including the PSX version).
