FOREVER

DISCLAIMER: It belongs to Paramount. But I'd like to see them prove that this is about one of their characters. Hah. Thought so.
There's no explanation for this. It just said "write me." So I did.
For Daddy.
PG-13

He had to go, she had to stay. There was no other choice.

Home. After years of trying, of hoping, their dream had come true.

She had gotten all the glory. He had been forgotten in the hubbub. She had interviewers and photographers following her everywhere. He was left to see if he could put his life back together.

But, in the end, it came down to who was the hunter, and who was the prey.

The prey couldn't stay. All of them - they were still outcasts, even if she had welcomed them into her heart, her home. And he must leave.

They knew this as they danced one last time at the party, as they held hands for the entire evening. Thinking not of what had been, or what was going to be, but of what could have been. The what-ifs occupying their minds, even through the speeches and compliments. And it was all for her.

They say that parting is such sweet sorrow. After the last dance was over, they parted ways. He lifted his hand to her face. She shook her head, ever so slightly. His hand fell away from the pale skin and flaming red hair.

But no one spilled tears. They accepted the inevitable. Without words, they turned away from each other, the what-ifs echoing through their minds.

He watched her go. Walking calmly out of his life. Into a life full of honor and respect. The life that he was cast out of by the organization. Because of a choice that he would make again if he had to.

Leaving him to pick up the pieces.

He raised his glass high as the door clicked shut.

I still love you.

There was no response. She didn't come running back into his life.

The hunter had left her prey. The higher power had left the subordinate. The love had left the dreamer.

He turned back to the empty room. Had he spoken, the shadows would have responded. But he stayed silent. Savoring the moment before facing the world. It was a moment for her, a vigil. He raised his now-empty glass again, knowing that somewhere, somehow, she knew what he was doing.

A toast to the could-have-beens.

To the honor.

To the sweet sorrow.

To the what-ifs.

Forever.

Forever and a day.
