Jules was annoyed out of sleep by the sound of her telephone. Her roommate Melissa growled and rolled over in bed, snuggling down harder into the covers. Jules sighed and reached out for the phone, pulling it under the blanket with her.

"Lo?"

"Julie…I need to talk to you."

She woke up a little more. Her heart skipped in her chest, as it had even when she’d seen him on the street, when she’d slammed the brakes and felt the car skid over the wet asphalt, when Sarah had pushed him out of the way before she rolled right over him. Even when he’d pushed himself up, muddy and bewildered, she’d been unable to stop asking if he was okay. In literature later that day she realized she was beginning to be afraid she might never get over him. "Tony?"

"Yeah. I…can you come downstairs?"

"You’re downstairs?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I need to talk to you!"

"About what?" More awake, suspicious.

"Everything," he said softly. "I need to talk to you about everything. Please Julie. Please come down."

She got up, starting to put on her Pooh slippers, finding a big yellow terrycloth robe. "I…what’s the matter, Tony? Are you drunk?"

"No, Julie, I promise. It’s just that I know…I know now I was scared and stupid and I hurt you, but I didn’t mean to…"

"What are you talking about?" She walked out of her room and into the hallway of the suite she and Melissa shared with six other girls, and then out onto the cold upstairs corridor, leaning over the railing. It was still drizzling outside, the April rain that wouldn’t die.

"I love you, that’s what I’m talking about! I love you and I want to talk to you right now!"

"So come outside and talk to me." She hung up the phone, and waited.

Tony came wandering out into the night, looking around for her. Jules whistled. "Hey, Romeo, up here."

He smiled. "You’re gorgeous, did I ever tell you that?"

"On many occasions, but you didn’t tell me much else."

"I know. It’s going to be different."

Julie raised an eyebrow. "Yeah?"

"Jules…Since February I’ve been having these really incredibly fubar dreams about this story Sarah and Chris told me. I was starting to think I was going crazy. And I didn’t want you to think I was crazy."

"Are you crazy?"

"No, although I’m pretty sure you can’t tell right now. And you know what I’m doing in the morning?"

"I can’t guess."

"I’m going to start making arrangements for graduation."

"Tony, are you for real?"

He just nodded.

"And you came here at two in the morning to tell me this?"

"Yeah."

"And what do you want me to do about it?"

"I want you to come down here and tell me you love me. I want you to give me another chance. I love you, Jules. I need you."

Her big green eyes started to fill with tears. "But I needed you too, Tony…and you never…you didn’t even fight for me, you just let me walk out!"

"I know. I’m so sorry, Jules. C’mere. Please?" He held open his arms, waiting for her to run down the stairs and jump into them.

Julie did.
