MASTERMODLER'S MODEL NOTES #1

Well, I just finished the Tamiya 1/35 Dragon Wagon and what a beautiful kit. Even straight out of the box, it was a dream to build. My only real complaint is how they displayed a German Panther on this -A1 version. They would have blown out the tires on the transporter. The -A2 had ramps over the trailer tires to accomidate wider tracked tanks like the T26 Pershing and many German tanks. I'm sure that some after market ramps will pop up somewhere. Another interesting varient would be the soft top version of the tractor, which was actually the more common version. Builder beware! I used 4 bottles of Testers OD on this sucker and it it took about 8 hours total to paint the base coat plus about another 4 hours to wash and drybush to shade it. This kit is quaranteed to give you a case of Carpul Tunnel Syndrom. I have mine on display at Rider's Hobby Shop in downtown Ann Arbor, MI, with a nice model of the Academy M18 Hellcat Motor Gun Carriage on the transporter. I've seen prices on this kit vary from $80.00 to $120.00, depending on hobby shop and how good a relationship you have with your favorite hobby shop. But, no matter the price, it is well worth it.
Right now, I'm working on two of those basterd Airfix 1/24 scale kits; the Stuka and the FW190. Actually, with a lot of TLC, they will build into a couple of trully beautiful (but BIG) kits. I'd love to find an old 1/24 or 1/25 scale 1930's Mercades or Diemler roadster to put between them. How many pictures have we seen of the hot shot Luftwaffe pilot in one of those by their faithful plane? I'll keep you informed on these and how they go togeather. You will discover that I have a love for big, unusual, and(or) strange kits and(or) paint schemes.
As I find unusual things, I will try to post them. If you are looking for something unusual, e-mail me and I'll help you look.
Today, I'm going to Rider's to pick up the new Monogram 1/48 JU-52 Iron Anne, the C-47 of the Luftwaffe. When they called me last night to tell me it was in, they simply said it was BIG. OH BOY!!! Well, we'll see. I'll post a description of the kit and a blow by blow of the building and painting of it. I'll cover what colors to use and the different paint schemes used. We'll also look at the markings and identifaction used on JU-52's. Stay tuned.
