The Jonny Quest idea was first thought of by Doug Wildey. He took it to Hanna-Barbara, who helped him create the classic Jonny Quest show in 1962. At that point in animation history, it was a dangerous move to make because this was a more realistic show with a storyline. Although producing every classic episode was challenging for the crew, Jonny Quest turned out to be a big hit.
Then came along the 80's. The crew decided to remake the show (The New Adventures) and throw in a couple of movies (Jonny's Golden Quest & Jonny Quest vs. The Cyber Insects). Sure, this was at least semi-successful, but the creators don't even acknowledge the Jonny Quest of 1986. Why? Whatever might have happened in those episodes and movies was not part of Doug Wildey's original storyline.
Thankfully, the 1990's arrived bearing new technology and animating freedom. With the help of animators in Asia, voice actors in the U.S., and an efficient crew, Jonny Quest: The Real Adventures was created. Hanna-Barbara decided to add in a little extra this time: computer animation. With it came a new system, Questworld, to help make more adventures with a virtual twist. New enemies like Dr. Jeremiah Surd and Ezekial Rage came into view, while old characters like Dr. Zin showed up. New exciting storylines brought in fans worldwide.
There were 52 episodes of The Real Adevntures created, which were divided into two seasons of 26 episodes each. A different crew of animators and actors worked on those two seasons. That explains why the characters are often drawn differently and sound different half the time.
Some episodes seem to have been done out of order. For example, Ezekial Rage was introduced in the first season, with the Quest Team recognizing him immediately. Then, in the second season, he was really introduced to the Team with a whole scene explaining his story. I can't place a real reason why this happened, because the writers were basically the same throughout.
Some new features of JQ:TRA added dazzle to the show. For instance, at the beginning of every voyage or new scene, a picture of the spinning globe and mode of transportation was seen. This cool little tidbit of the show was created using computer animation. The most prominent part of computer animation in JQ:TRA was Questworld, Dr. Quest's virtual reality system. When a character logged on to the system, scenes with 3D graphics of intense detail were shown. The other regular scenes with VR integrated in them were the Quest Bytes at the end of most episodes. These cute little scenes featured Jonny Quest himself in fun and exciting adventures in Questworld. Some of the best were his creation of a huge paper airplane and the battle with the computer viruses.
Dr. Benton Quest is a famous scientist who is regularly asked to figure out, search, or explore the unknown. Years back, Intelligence One saw his need for protection and assigned him a bodyguard, Roger "Race" Bannon. It wasn't long before Race became a trusted friend and assistant.
With this pair are three teenagers, Jonny, Jessie, and Hadji. Jonny, Dr. Quest's biological son, always seems to just barely escape danger with his wits and courage. Hadji, the adopted Indian son of Benton, assists him in his laboratory and excels in thinking and yoga. Jessie, only daughter of Race Bannon who appeared a year before the series takes place, is a cool combination of action and intelligence. The three travel with their fathers often, seeking adventure and answers at every turn.
Every once in a while, Jessie leaves the team to spend time with her Columbian mother, Estella Velesquez. She and Race divorced when Jessie was younger. As for Jonny's mother, Rachel Wildey, she passed away when he was younger. A picture of her was featured in the episode "Edge of Yesterday." Estella appeared in several episodes that were filled with action.
In the old series, the Quest Team (minus Jessie) lived in the Palm Keys of Florida, USA. Now, they are in Rockport, Maine. The Quest Compound there also controlled the lighthouse, which contained the machinery for Questworld. Unfortunately, though, this mansion was destroyed in "The Robot Spies." They now have decided to move back to Florida.
By tradition, American animators use interesting scenes from the episodes themselves in the opening theme song. Naturally the JQ:TRA crew did this. But why didn't we see episodes with the following in them: Jessie on a horse getting away from a helicopter, Jessie flipping out of the water, Jessie pulling Jonny onto a horse, and Jonny & Bandit running from another helicopter? Well, according to the Unnoficial's page, these scenes were cut from an episode, from an episode that was cut all together, and/or specially made for the opening credits. It makes us wonder what happened in those missing parts.
