Five Days in Beijing
by Jeanne Rose MacWow

Spending five days in the city of Beijing is a little like taking a moment's peek through a key hole at strange, exotic land . . . not enough time to truly know the people or immerse oneself in their culture or appreciate the depth of their history . . . but even so, a brief, vivid glimpse can stay with you like a fiery after-image . . . dragons and pagodas, bicycles and watermelons, silk and pearls and coissonne, chopsticks and rickshaws and acrobats and Chinese characters, and a great wall snaking over green mountains in the blazing sun.

This is the story of the five days I was in Beijing, June 27 through July 1 of the year 1999.
